Missing Security Tab - can't map shared printer in home network

C

camderek

I'm running XP Pro SP2 and I'm trying to share my printer on my home
network. When I try to add the printer from another computer running
XP SP2 I'm asked to log in as:
Username: <computer #1>\Guest (this entry is greyed out - I have to
access the printer using this account)
Password: (fill in password here)

I've tried changing the password to something simple on computer #1
and filling in that password, but get the error "Windows could not
complete that operation".

As I can't see the Security Tab I can't set access to "Everyone".
Furthermore - when I try to access the printer via mapping it from
another computer

1) I've disabled "Use simple file sharing" - but still no Security
Tab on my shared printer.

2) I've opened gpedit.msc - navigated to \\Computer Configuration
\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer to look
for the "Hide Security Tab" to Disable this (per other posts) - I
can't find that entry.

3) I've opened the registry and gone to:
\\HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer
\\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer

In both folders I looked for the "NoSecurityTab" DWORD to see if it
was set to 1. Neither entry existed - so I created that entry in both
folders and set it to 0.

Still can't find the security tab.

Any help/advice would be appreciated - thanks

Have you tried "Disabling" the Guest account?

WTC Remove: Perfect - I was actually able to solve it before reading
that advice - but that was step 1 of what I did. Thanks much for the
response :) Once I got that step the next one was easier to find. Be
that as it may, following is the post I put together as a final follow
up on this issue:

Happiness is a shared network printer (apparently)

For general info - and hopefully to save a headache or two out there:

Solved this with 2 steps:
1) Per http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290403/EN-US/
In registry, went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet
\Control\Lsa
Added "ForceGuest=0" (I'm running XP Pro - so this forces the
computer to use Standard file sharing (not Simple).
MY NOTE: A reboot wasn't required in my case to my surprise - before
rebooting I checked and the Security tab was already there. Of
course, results may vary.

2) Per
http://groups.google.com/group/micr..."+everyone+full&rnum=1&hl=en#974b066d0dace2f1
Go To Start->Run->type "secpol.msc"
Double click Local Policy
Double click User Rights Assignment
Search for the following policies:
a. "Access this computer from the network"
b. "Deny access to this computer from the network"

The default settings for the "Access this computer from the network"
policy is to allow: Administrators, Power Users, Users, Backup
Operators, and the Everyone group. All should have check boxes
checked (MY NOTE: I had to add Everyone in here as the only entries
were 2 local system accounts)

The default setting for the "Deny access to this computer from the
network" policy is blank. No one should be listed in this policy
(SUPPORT_388945a0 may be
listed here. it's ok).

wow - off & on 2 hours of finally finding this - hopefully less time
for the rest of you

Computer #2 (trying to access printer) in a member of my work's

So we're on the same page.
The printer is connected to the XP Pro machine in your home LAN.
LAN is a workgroup (MSHome).
File and Print Sharing is installed in Network Properties.
F&P is enabled in the firewall settings.
Simple file sharing is disabled.
Printer Properties has Sharing tab but no Security tab.
Printer is Shared in Properties > Sharing tab.
**Note: If a reboot doesn't help to get the Security tab, boot to Safe Mode as the
Administrator and the Security tab should be available.

Work computer will not install/add drivers/printer in Printers and Faxes.
Work computer is in a Domain.

Are you trying to access using a UNC or URL?
Home and Work firewalls are configured to allow F&P Sharing?
Home and Work firewalls are configured to allow IP's as trusted from each network?

Thanks for the response and detailed summary :)

For clarification in case others come across this:
I was able to get it working (see my previous response detailing 2
changes I needed to make - after many assorted other attempts)
Rebooting in Safe Mode doesn't help me get the Security tab in
Printers & Faxes since Safe Mode apparently doesn't allow me to start
the "Print Spooler" (at least, that was the error I got when I tried
to manually start that service so I could access the printers).
To add the printer I mapped it and then was asked for a Username/
Password - I logged in as Computer #1's local Administrator - but
after that the mapping stayed. Maybe a reboot of Computer #2 means I
have to remap.... but that's easy enough - and nothing I'm worried
about.

Final clarification: I disabled Windows Firewall on both comps as I
had enough frustration without wanting to also worry about dropped
communication behind the scenes :)

I read it, glad to hear it's seen and available.

Ahhh, hadn't thought of services in SM.

Actually the mapping should reconnect as long as you checked the box while creating
the map to "Reconnect at logon".
