My printer which use to work no longer works because, I'm told, I do not
have any printers installed.
I don't know what has changed this.

If I try to add a printer I get an error:
No ports enumerated

What does that mean?

The printer is connected to the usb as is my scanner which still works.

Thanks

Reinstall the printer software as it will setup the USB port to be used
by the printer driver.

I can't.

I tried my CD and downloaded from HP both got to the page asking if it's USB
or parallel and before I could select the
No ports enumerated dialog poped up.

Thanks

The "enumerated port" should appear as something like USB001 in the
ports tab. If that is already in use then you may get the error you see
if you attempt a reinstall. If that is not the case then Unplugging and
uninstalling the printer should allow you to reinstall the printer from
the beginning.

Well, I don't know nuthin' but that makes me think if he unplugs his
scanner, maybe hte printter will use that port. I don't know what
will happen when the scanner is plugged back in, but who really needs
a scanner anyhow.

I just tried to add a printer and was told the printer spooler is not
running.

Could this be the result of the other message or the cause of it?

How can I see a list of ports

Thanks

I just found Administrative tool/Services and notice that the Print Spooler
has a description that's full of non-Roman characters.

And it is Manual start, so I started it and now my printer shows OK and
works.

Should it be Automatic?

I found Properties so I can make changes.

If I change it will it stay after reboot?

But the description is still garbage!

What should I change that to?

Thanks

Yes, Automatic.

Looks like I can't change the description.  I tried without success.

Thanks a lot

It should say this:

Loads files to memory for later printing.

You cannot change it easily but it would be annoying if it was wrong.

Also notice the Extended and Standard tabs in the bottom of the
Service window.

What about the other Service descriptions - look okay?

Description in the left pane of the Extended window same junk as in the
right pane

Yes. This is the only one messed up.

Thanks
