I have a friend who attempts to send email containing pictures in the body
of the message. But when I open the mail from here all I get is a blank
outline with a red X in the upper left hand corner. Is this something
setting in her system that causes this and if so how can it be changed?

Thanks for the input Shawn
The problem seems to be with the sender. I received the email with the
pictures for friend A and I could see the just fine. I sent the pictures to
friend B. She could see them but when she tries to forward them back to me
and others none of the receiptants (including me) can see them.

Does that explanation make sense?

Which email program does friend B use?
Sounds like friend B is using some incorrect settings.

I am using Windows Mail under VISTA. The others are using Outlook Express
running under XP.

If the mail was sent from Outlook using Outlook's RTF format then Outlook
Express will never find the attachment. Outlook Express does not understand
Outlook's RTF format. Ask the Outlook user to please use Plain Text,
especially when sending attachments.

Emails sent from Outlook Express should be fully compatible
with Windows Mail. If friend B was using Outlook, that would
explain the problem. Friend B should email the pictures to herself
and to friend A to find out if that works. Problems with Outlook
Express are not really suitable for discussion in this Windows Mail forum.

All references to Outlook Express also apply to WinMail not being able to
decipher Outlook's RTF format.

Please identify your father's email program. I have not heard
of one called "internet mail".

Which antivirus program are you running?

I have the red x problem with Windows Mail & Vista. The email I refer to is
from Microsoft Download Notifications.

Tools | Options | Security
Uncheck "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail."

I took all the steps described by Gary and Frank and I still have the red x's
in mail from Microsoft. What else can I do??

What firewall, anti-virus application or security suite is installed? There
are some that cause problems which do not appear immediately.

As I recall, I sometimes get the red X's in Microsoft's Download Notification.
If all your other HTML email looks OK, I would assume it is some oversight
on the part of the composer of that newsletter.

To follow up on this, I just received the latest Microsoft Downloads
Notifications newsletter, and six of its graphical links show red X's.
None of my other HTML email has this problem, so I suspect the
publisher of that newsletter is doing something wrong.

I have read all the postings regarding the red x problem. I have two
computers. Both are using Windows XP. MSN hotmail is my mail, Wild Blue
Satelite is my ISP. The laptop computer is using Outlook Express. The
desktop is using Windows Live (just converted a couple of days ago). Trend
Micro is my anti-virus. I don't understand firewalls so I can't tell you
about that. PROBLEM: The laptop works fine, the desktop has the red x
problem. I have compared every setting in the Tools/Options .... both the
computers are the same. What else can I check and compare? The ONLY
difference is one is Outlook Express, the other is Windows Live.

Somehow you wound up in the wrong place.
This forum (newsgroup actually) is for Vista's Windows Mail program.
"Windows Live" is not a program, it is a group name for a whole family
of programs, see http://get.live.com .
If you meant Windows Live Mail, their support group is
microsoft.public.windows.live.mail.desktop .
If you meant Windows Live Hotmail, their support group is
microsoft.public.msn.discussion .

In a number of messages with pictures attached, click on the paperclip that
should
appear near the top right corner of the message. Record the file names and
whether the pictures displayed correctly. Look for a pattern of the
pictures
displaying correctly if the parts of the file names starting with the last
period
are in one group, but not if they are in another group. Tell us what
pattern you
see.

Generally that means that the posture was not really sent. When viewing the
message click File | Properties and give use the size of the message.
