No Operating System

The message "No Operating System" is what I get when I
try booting up Win XP Home Edition. Bios shows hard
drive. Any suggestions.

Sounds to me like Windows XP isn't installed properly. If
you boot from the Win XP CD you should be able to
reinstall it.

Is your computer new? Some vendors (I don't remember who)
don't install anything for you, even your operating
system.

This computer is a 1 year old HP. I don't have the boot
disc. You have to get it from HP for $32.00.

sounds like your master boot record is somehow currupt or
overwritten. Some viruses do this type of damage. Might be
a good idea to buy a new harddrive and start over. If you
know how to set up multiple drives you can repair the
damage on the drive that will not boot by formatting it
during installation. Buy a new drive, set it up as master
and set the old drive up as slave. Once setup is complete
on the new drive , go to disc management snapin and on the
other drive .........format it to wipe out was was there.
Hope this helps
