No midi output

This problem has been ongoing for ages but I can't identify the fault
I have a Creative Audigy 2nx Soundblaster external card running on xp home.
I can play mp3's fine using my creative media source player but I have no
midi output henve I can't play .wav files nor .midi files

Control panel will not accept my Audigy creative USB SoundFont Synth as its
output midi playback device; it will not retain the setting

Can anyone tell me what could be wrong?

TIA

Sheri

I have same sound card, love it.
Did you change your .mid .midi & .wav file associations
in Folder Options (in control panel) to creative media
source player? Otherwise they will default to windows
media player. Post back if you still have trouble.

Thanks, zverb, yes all my file associations are appropriate to cmsss.
I think the clue lies in my control panel not retaining my settings for midi
output.

My player works beautifully and i can play mp3's with no probs.

I guess you checked here too.

Start \ Control Panel (set in Classic View) \
Sound and Audio Devices \ Click Audio Tab at top \
Midi Music Play Back set to
Creative USB Soundfont Synth / Click Apply

Yes, but the Midi playback field doesn't retain the setting. When i re-open
control panel, the midi playback field is blank again. This happens with
microsoft wavetable too
With USB SoundFont Synth the volume and 'about' tabs are greyed out.

The strange thing is, is that when i open and use SoundFont Bank Manager, I
can play the sounds on the keyboard there??????

Totally flumoxed. One clue could be that I lost all windows sounds BEFORE I
bought the external card. I bought the card because i thought my onboard
sound had failed. I have since disabled all onboard sound.

I am thinking this could be a Mobo fault but can find no answer from a
thorough net search many times

Its not. Its a bug in Windows XP but i'm unable to figure out what causes it. Happens in Professional but does not happen in Windows XP Home.

Problem appears to be in the registry. I did comparison of all references to the word midi in the registrys of both windows xp pro and home edition and notices various differences.
