No microphone audio in MSN Messenger set-up wizard

MSN Messenger. Windows XP. Dial-up account. New Athalon Computer.
New Logitech Orbit webcam with built in microphone. (on par with a
Logitech Pro 4000, I would guess, but with built in tracking) . The
Video works fine two ways between me and a friend.

However, I cannot get any sound to register when I speak when in the
MSN messenger set-up wizard. It detects my Nvidia nforce audio card
fine, and my speakers work fine in set-up, but when it comes to
testing the microphone it says:
"Wizard did not detect any sound from your microphone. Make sure it
is plugged in properly, etc etc".

Well, it is plugged in right - using "Yahoo Messenger", I connected
with the guy audio and video fine, both before and after I tried MSN
Messenger.

Is MSN Messenger written bad or something? Why can't the microphone
even register in the MSN Messenger set-up Wizard? Is it because the
Logitech Orbit is new technology or something? But probably the same
microphone components as the Logitech Pro 4000 - anyone with a pro
4000 encounter the same problem?

P.S. - Separate problem - We couldn't even test his sound to me
either, because MSN Messenger kept trying to connect with the sound
channel, but it never did - does the MSN Messenger server go out
sometimes or something? But video worked, only the audio channel
didn't.

Thanks for the advice, but it doesn't address the problem. I spent
enough bucks on this thing and like the way it picks up my voice even
though 2-3 feet away. I'll die with the built-in mic. Can Microsoft
be so stupid with a new up-to-date release for windows XP and an
up-to-date webcam mic plugged into a USB port that it can't find my
mic input?

Everything works fine in Yahoo Messenger. Why not in MSN Messenger?
Maybe there is something basic I am not doing, or not setting up...

So, it turned out it was just something basic I was missing, as my
last sentece said.. Microsoft is not stupid.

What happened was MSN messenger detected my Logitech Webcam fine -
ok, no problems with video. Then it detected my nVidia sound card and
ran a speaker test, ok fine, no probs. However, I didn't pick up on
the microphone selection - I didn't even notice a microphone selection
I guess - well, it had detected my nVidia sound card, same as the
speaker selection. So I could have plugged in a separate mic into the
mic slot and it would have worked. But after I did noticed the mic
selection, I clicked on the little arrow thingy, and it gave me
another choice - the Logitech webcam, same as the video choice. So I
chose it, and it works now...
