We have a Dell Inspiron laptop running Windows XP sp1 on
the main partition, on which we undertook the following:
1) Using Partition magic, split the 40 GB drive into 2
partitions.
2) Using Symantec Ghost, tried to restore an image of a
Windows XP sp1 system to the second partition using an
image file on the first partition
When this failed, the laptop restarted, but reported
missing operating system.
I checked the boot.ini file and this directs to the
correct disk partition, etc.
I have installed a copy of Windows XP to the second
partition and this boots fine. The contents of both
partitions are intact and look fine, disk appears to be
in good health.
I editted the boot.ini on the new partition, rebooted.
But when selecting the old partition, the screen turns
black and reboots the PC.
I have also tried the recovery console, which can see the
windows install, but reports it cannot create a boot
config for it.
I need to recover this partition if possible rather than
have to spend a load of time finding all the software and
reinstalling it all.
Any ideas?
