I am trying to share a folder, I created in my documents
over the network where only certain people having access.
I've made a user name and password on the host computer
and instead of getting a login box I keep getting the
error access denied. I also made sure I set permissions
within in the folder itself.
Any ideas

I'm sorry, but Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared folders
the way that Windows 95, 98, and Me do.

Here are some ways to control access:

1. Create a hidden share and only tell selected people about it. I've
written a web page with details:

Windows XP Simple File Sharing
http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp/filesharing.htm

2. Assign a password to the "Guest" account. When other people try
to access your computer, they'll be prompted to enter the password:

a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password, enter a password, and click OK.

3. Create a compressed folder and define a password for it. Everyone
who accesses the folder, from the local computer or from the network,
must specify the password to access the files in the compressed
folder. This Microsoft Knowledge Base article has details:

HOW TO: Use Compressed (Zipped) Folders in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;306531

4. If you have Windows XP Professional, you can disable Simple File
Sharing and define access control lists that specify user names and
their allowed mode of access. Ron Lowe and I have written a web page
with details:

Windows XP Professional File Sharing

ok..let me get all this straight....

I have an XP Pro system and there are four other systems on the
network all with XP Pro. Now i want to share a folder providing access
to two systems called Illusion and ARSK. My system's name is RAZI. ok
now lets get everything in line..

1. I disable simple file sharing
2. Create two profiles with the names XIllusion and KHS.
3. These two profiles are NOT password protected (whereas both the
systems log on to their respective profiles (KHS profile for ARSK, and
XIllusion for ILLUSION) with their passwords (QWERTY for KHS profile
on ARSK computer, and QQQ for XIllusion profile for ILLUSION computer)
4. Note: Ive created XIllusion and KHS profiles WITHOUT passwords,
whereas they log onto their systems with passwords.
5. I remove the Everyone access from the sharing and add these two
users to the ACL.

RESULT: They cant access, probably because Ive not provided passwords
for their profiles. But later I did set those passwords(QQQ for
XIllusion, and QWERTY for KHS) ........still Access Denied!

TEST NUMBER 2:

1. I create a profile in my system called CS with password FFF. This
profile doesnt exists on both ILLUSION and ARSK systems.
2. Now on the folder's ACL, only CS profile is added.

RESULT: Still access denied. According to
[http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing] (or
whtever the web address is); there should appear a login box on
ILLUSION and ARSK systems when trying to access my shared folder. And
these systems are supposed to enter CS as username and FFF as
password. But no login box appears.

THE GREAT QUESTION: WHat is MISSING?????????? Am I supposed to disable
Guest account (which I havent done for both the above tests)? Or
should I keep the Guest account enabled and just provide a password
for it ? What else needs to be done?
