No icons for cd or dvd devices after direct x and adobe premier pro install

After installing Direct X 9.0 and Adobe Premier Pro, I no
longer see icons for my cd and dvd drives in My Computer.
Does anyone know how to correct this problem?
 
Which drive is XP installed on? If other than C, see if this helps:

Adaptation for the Article: Needs to be a path not a drive letter, so subst
c: [x]:\. Note backslash converts a drive letter to a path. It must point
to a valid folder as in: c: d:\Windows
