CD/DVD Burning issues?

Hi there,

I have 2 Plextor DVD writers (PX750A & PX760A) in my system (WinXP Pro) and
am having major problems writing to them.

I have no other CD/DVD burning software on the system (discounting Adobe
Premiere which has burned 2 TDK DVD's easily first time with no issues).

I originally inserted a blank CD, dragged some folders/files from My
Documents to the CD icon G: and I was told I could not burn them (this I
discovered later was because the option in Properties/Recording/Enable CD
recording on this device was not checked.)

I removed the blank CD from G: and reinserted it into F: dragged & dropped
my folders/files onto the F: icon and this now seemed to compile the list
OK.

When I opened the CD icon (now F:) I saw the folders/files ghosted waiting
to be burned as expected.

I wanted to add a DV clip that would have taken the size way above the blank
CD so I removed the CD and inserted a blank TDK DVD-R.

I dragged the clip into the F: icon (now displaying DVD instead of CD) with
no issues.

Wondering if I could enable both drives to enable CD burning I altered the
properties on the original G: drive but then noticed it has disabled F: (is
there no way to have both drives enabled simultaneously?) so I went back and
re-enabled F:

I then seemed to lose the balloon telling me I had files waiting to be
written (how do you check to see just what is waiting to be written?) and
somewhere along the way things stopped working so I used the CD burning
wizard that opened to delete the files waiting to be burned.

Thinking I could start the process over again I inserted the blank DVD into
F: and tried to drag the folders/files into it but this time I am given the
error;

"Windows encountered a problem when trying to copy the folder. What do you
want Windows to do? Skip, Retry or Cancel"

All I want Windows to do is burn the damn disc...but how?

I rebooted but even though both optical drives see the disc as normal and
pop open a requestor asking me what I want to do neither F: nor G: will let
me burn the DVD - I get the same error as listed above.

Can some kind soul help please?

Thanks & regards,

Thanks for the quick reply Plato, how did I miss this?

<blush>

That document was published in 2002 - is this still current today?

The drive does actually recognise and report when a DVD-R is inserted but
you mean to say in the 4 years since the article was published Microsoft
have not updated XP to burn DVD from the OS?

What with all the issues I see with CD/DVD recording software regarding
conflicts etc. would it not have made sense to incorporate this fundamental
& core function into the OS by now?

<sigh>

I find this incredible - I mean my first Pioneer DVD writer cost 650ukp when
it was released and was regarded as a high-end niche product but now the
price of a DVD burner can be less than 30ukp it is technology for the
masses - cheaper than a CD reader used to be - and support should have been
added by now surely?

MS seem to buy or incorporate everything else into the OS - and Media
Center, Movie Maker etc have the facility to burn DVD why not their flagship
and most expensive OS to date?

Kind regards,

Yes, that is what he meant to say.

MS has enough trouble getting the software that they have already released
to work.

Perhaps so, but they still have not added DVD burning capability. EasyCD
Creator works quite well for me thus I don't care when or if MS adds this
facility.

Perhaps they want to leave something for the third party folks to cover so
they don't get involved with the feds.
Perhaps they realize how much code it takes to perform this task and have
other things to do.
Perhaps Vista will add this capability.
