I have read a lot of post regarding this subject

installing the winsock
ntsh from cmd and nothing
simply is not working
I have the limited connection this is so frustationg could some one please
help me with this problem, I know is not the ISP connection or the router
becouse i have a laptop and whne i connect it works without a problem

My network nick gets the ip but is not able to get the gateway please advice
me what to do

Oscar,

I know what your going through. I've just posted a message -"Auto DHCP not
working - Update Status". The answer I found was to remove SP2 and then IP
addressing was obtained automatically. With SP2 installed (on host), all
clients had to me set up with static IP addresses.

Removing SP2 is not a fix or a cure.

Ensure the DHCP service is running, run the Winsock repair tool (tip #3 at
www.careyholzman.com/netfixes.htm) and delete and reinstall your NIC from
the Device Manager.

One of those should do it.

This typically happens to people who install SP2 without first removing
spyware.

Thank you vey much for your answers
Do you think that if i remove my spyware and then do a repair of my windows
should fix the problem ?

In my case I obtain my ip from my ISP and i think i'm behind a Nat just in
case this information where relevant.

the "WinsockFix.zip" i have already try it before now will try to install
and re-install teh nick will keep you posted, however if you remember
anything else that can help please let me know
thanks in advance

I have done the uninstall of the nic and reinstall with recent and older
drivers and still doesnt get the gateway ip
I'm frustated :(
I just get the ip address and the subnet mask but nothing with the gateway
or dns

please any advice of what to do, I'm thinking that the only thing to do is
downgrade the xp to sp1 and if someone could tell me how to do it will
appriciate
thanks again in advance for the advice and the patience

If you're plugged into a router, reset the router using the reset button
located somewhere on it.

Is O/S debugging a science or an art? Try this trick:

1) Disconnect your CAT5 or disable the wireless adapter
2) Deactivate all resident firewall/spyware/whateverware software
2.5) Uncheck all non-essential protocols and services in your network
connection properties. I usually leave QoS and IP running.
3) Restart in Safe Mode
4) Complete the SP2 update
5) Reboot in normal fashion

Carey,

Not a fix or a cure?????? I tried all suggestions that have been posted at
your site and others, all to no avail. I've been very appreciative of the
help given, and make no mistake, have learnt a lot. Whether or not it's a
fix or cure, one thing is certain, it's now working with SP2 removed. I'll
try and re-install SP2 on the host again but this time I'll probably try the
suggestion given by Eric Niewoehner

well I have tryed all the solutions in here
and I just get dhcp works now windows ip configurations is not working
so i can't get the ip or the wins proxy to work to been able to navigate

Any advice ?

XP SP2 should have no effect on DHCP resolution. It's a solid package,
and, IMO, definitely worth the effort. I've been running it since the
network install package was first available without problems. Unless
something is very badly mangled, SP2 will not be responsible for the
problem you're having. As others have noted previously, SP2 _must_ be
installed on a completely clean system - no viruses, worms, or spyware.

Back to the DHCP problem. Do you have all the information needed to
configure the machine for static addressing (gateway address, DNS addreses,
etc)? If so, have you tried that? If you do, and static addressing works,
there may be an unknown dependency in the DHCP client service. Look under
the Management Console, Services, DHCP Client Properties. The 4th tab,
Dependencies, should alert you to any missing components/services.

The reason I bring this up is that I ran into this problem (no DHCP
resolution) after selectively uninstalling NAV 2003. I left the rest of
NSW 2003 intact. The uninstaller left some residue behind in the form of a
SYMTDI dependency. The NAV uninstall process removed the driver
(SYMTDI.sys) but failed to remove the driver and dependency entries from
the registry. I had to manually delete the SYMTDI dependency entries from
the registry to restore normal operation.
