Cannot get Network adapter to release IP

For some reason, I can't get my Intel network adapter to Release it's IP,
then renew.

I'm running XP Pro with SP1, connected to a '2Wire' DSL Gateway / router
with DHCP Enabled.

For some reason, the IP defaults to a 169.254.101.* which I guess is a
Private address, and it won't pick up the DHCP broadcast from the router.

Any suggestions would be most helpful. Thanks!

The 169.254.x.x address wasn't assigned by a DHCP server, so it can't
be released. It indicates that the network adapter wasn't able to
communicate with a DHCP server to get an address.

Try a different network cable and router port. Try explicitly
specifying the speed and duplex settings instead of automatically
sensing them. For more information, see my web page:

I had the same problem... check here for a possible solution:

Read down to the bottom of the page... you are looking for the reference to
winsockxpfix.exe and Lspfix.exe. Winsock fixed me up in ten seconds. I have
not used the second one. Just do a Google search for each and you will find
a download for them. Barry
