Since I upgraded to SP2 (Win XP Pro) I am getting the message in the
subject line quite often when I attempt to open MSIE. This is in a
pop-up box that gives me the option to continue working offline or to
try again.

Since I am connected 24/7 via a cable modem, I don't see why I am
getting this error message. Of course, try again always works
instantly.

It seems as if something is happening to tell the network connection
that I am not connected when I really am.

FWIW, I have XP Firewall turned off, Zone Alarm 5.1 turned on, and
connected to my wireless router with a 10/100 cable (as is another
computer in this room). Most of the time, my laptop is not on and so
these two computers are the only things active on the LAN.

Any help, pointers to knowledge base articles, help files would be
greatly appreciated.

I suspect that there are other applications which are effected, but
don't speak up the way MSIE does -- in particular my Eudora running in
the background sometimes downloads web content in emails and sometimes
does not (and only gives me the red x).

Dale,

two suspicions. One is that Zone Alarm interferes. If you cannot
rule that out, you may have to uninstall it entirely, then
install the latest version. (I don't know ZA and don't know
which the latest version is.

The other suspicion is adware. Use the Winsock repair procedure
in http://www.michna.com/kb/WxSP2.htm.
