Sorry to pose this question again but thread broke.
My daughter at college is having a problem with staying connected. She can
connect with no problems. After about 5 minutes she get a cannot find server
in response to any attempt to move off the page she is on.. Tried mozilla
firefox and get a time out. The only way to reconnect is to reboot the
computer.
I have used both a direct cable connection to cable co. modem and going
through a router. My laptop works fine used wireless connection. Cable co
tested everything and they check out fine. Daughter tried her computer at a
friends house and got same results.
She had norton security center first and then Mcafee. after Mcafee
subscription ended she started with problems. Her friend tried to disable
Mcafee after unsuccessful uninstall using zone alarm It did work but was not
ideal. I used Mcafee cleanup tool and norton cleanup tool . This allowed an
internet connection as it should be but cannot stay connected. I thought
that windows firewall might be causing problem but cannot disable it the
options are greyed out
This is on xp home sp2 now running AVG Tried with and without AVG
installed. We are not running zone alarm but it is installed. The computer is
in Lexington,Ky I am in New Martinsville . WV so this is now long distance
daddy help...I need real help since she cannot do her assignments in 5
minutes.

Tom,

Please explain "tried her computer at a friends house and got same results.".
Same as what? Cable Company? Or her previous experience (in other
paragraph?)??

I'd start by looking at the DNS settings. This sounds like a DNS server
timeout, with no backup server.

Next, look for an LSP / Winsock problem.

Finally, I'd have her install PingPlotter, set it to pinging the primary DNS
server, and see exactly when and where she's losing connectivity.

She used a wireless connection probably same ISP but not sure. She actually
had the same symptoms with the disconnections at her friends house.
Thanks for the response!

Hi

Uninstalling all of these "Protection Stuff" might leave registry hooks
leading to Nowhere and residual unneeded processes running in background.
Given the amount of the stuff that was taken off, it might be that the unit
would be better to reformatted and load fresh installation of Windows.
Sticking there after to simple effective protection rather than the
"Behemoths' suits".

Short of reformatting, you can try this, http://www.ezlan.net/debug.html
