I can only stay connected for a few minutes. I will get a long pause with
hour glass
and then cannot find server. This happens within 5 minutes. I have to reboot
to get connected again. I have had norton and mcafee but uninstalled both I
used both of their cleanup tools. now running AVG.

Hi
What is the nature of your Internet connection, and how it is configured?

If you have a wireless connection and your signal is low, or there are
several people connecting wirelessly could be a problem.

Wireless is a token ring technology, since your laptop may not see
other laptops (if they are on the other side of the router). and to
avoid collisions it has to have some way of avioding it. The more
people on it, the harder it is to keep your connection alive.

If you have a wired network, make sure your cables arent bent, no
splits or tears. also make sure the ends inside the connection (on
your internet cable) didnt get pulled out. Then turn your router and
modem off for about 15 seconds and restart them. If that doesnt solve
the problem, it could be a lot of other things, but we need more
information.

I have tried two ways to hook up direct from cable modem and through a
wireless router but I used a cable connection. My wireless laptop works fine
with the router .
I have spent about 45 min utes on phone with cable tech. Everything looks
good on their side. All tests looked good for set up. We suspected leftover
Mcafee and Norton junk after uninstall so I used norton and mcafee cleanup
utilities. tried to stay connected by safe mode with networking - no luck. I
am using AVG anti virus right now. I tried to disable windows firewall but
options are greyed out and I cannot get access to disable it. This is my
daughters computer at college and a friend had thought to disable Mcafee by
using zone alarm to disable Mcafee. this was before I cleaned up. Nothing
will connect to the internet after the cannot find server message.
Strange thing is that if it looks like a disconnect is happening sometimes
clicking a link in the same domain will still work for a while. I have even
tried firefox it ends with a time out error.
If I reboot I get a good connection again for a while..

Thanks, but been there done that. The computer says it is connected at
100mbps even after we can no longer use it. Cable tests by ISP point to
computer. Laptop works fine only desktop won't work.

Try uninstalling drivers and reinstalling. make sure they are the
right ones. Also make sure in Device Manager on the network card that
the option "turn this device off to save power..." inactivity can turn
your internet connection off.
