Poor Yorick's Almanack

My sister is having trouble getting onto the internet through her cable
modem. When she restarts the modem -- or even breaks the network
connection to her computer by unplugging the ethernet cable from the
back of her modem -- she gets only about two or three minutes of
connection before she gets the "cannot find server" error page in her
browser (IE 6). She has Windows XP SP2 and MacAfee Personal Firewall
Plus. This problem persists even when both of those firewalls are
disabled. She's plugged directly into the cable modem and no other
computers share the connection. The properties of her connection say
that she's getting an IP address assigned to her and that her status is
connected, though after a while it looks like she's sending a lot more
packets than she's receiving.

I would appreciate any help with this problem.
Thanks,

Start with some basic troubleshooting. Uninstall the McAfee firewall. I have
experienced fire walls being disabled and still causing an internet access
problem.

Keep things simple. When building a network start with your connectivity
first, and get it working, then add on the security you would like to use.
Hope this helps.

Another basic - call the cable provider. There may be something wrong
with her modem and/or the cable lines into the house. She should also
try a different ethernet cable and a different, known-working network
card (nic). Yes, it might be a software setting, but don't forget to
check the hardware basics too.

Thanks Scott. I forgot to mention that she did call the cable company,
and they could see her computer just fine. I'll tell her to uninstall
the mcafee.
