No connection between laptop and printer

I hope someone can con help me. I have tried everything I can think of (with
my limited knowledge). Everything worked great between my Gateway MX3702 with
Windows XP Verison 5.1 Service Pack 3 laptop and my Brother MFC-465CN printer
until the power went out the other day. Now they do not see each other. My
brother printer says 192.168.1.2 / My IP Address says 192.168.1.4 / My
default Gateway says 192.168.1.1 / I have tried unplugging my router and
cable modem, restarting the printer and computer. If someone could help me I
would be quite grateful.

Is the printer hooked directly to the notebook, or is it networked through
your hub? If through the hub, try connecting it directly to the notebook and
see if it works. It's possible that a power surge took out the network card
or some other component. Do you have everything but the notebook attached to
a UPS or surge protector?
If the printer is being networked, check your port properties for the
printer. Open Settings, Printer & Faxes, then right-click on your printer
and pick Properties. Click on the Ports tab. Is the IP for printer port the
same as your printer? If not, change it to match.
Good place to start.

Thanks, I didn't think about changing the ip address on the printer. Once I
did that then boom. It started working just fine.

Where does your laptop think the printer is?

Printers should be set to a fixed IP address, outside of the router's DHCP
range.
