No clock synchronization

Hans L

Hello: I get the following warning for both time.nist.gov and, earlier,
time.windows.com:

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: W32Time
Event Category: None
Event ID: 36
Date: 4/7/2008
Time: 12:55:49 PM
User: N/A
Computer: HANS
Description:
The time service has not been able to synchronize the system time for 49152
seconds because none of the time providers has been able to provide a usable
time stamp. The system clock is unsynchronized.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

When I did "Update Now" (Win XP Home) , I got an error message for
time.nist.gov , but a successful synchronization for time.windows.com.

I'm not sure I understand the message "The time service has not been able to
synchronize the system time for 49152 seconds because none of the time
providers has been able to provide a usable time stamp.". Can anyone explain
it.

I understand that this can also be a fire wall issue (I have Nortin Internet
SecuritY). While I know that the service is called "Windows Time", I am not
sure how to enable nist.gov (and I do not expect anyone here to know, since
this is not a Norton site, but if you know, I would appreciate a hint).

The time service is shown to start automatically, but, obviously, it times
out.

Any help would be appreciated.

Regards

Hans L

The easiest fix is to select another time server or a pool server.
Right-click the mouse on the system clock in the System Tray and click on
Adjust Date/Time from the menu. Select the Internet Time tab. The user can
simply type in the address of a new time server in the Server: address box.
Tap Update Now to verify the server connection can be made. Tap OK to finish
the configuration. Note that the user must have Administrator permissions to
configure date and time on a Windows XP machine.

Lists of time servers. NOTE the rules of engagement for each server you
connect to...

Pool servers. Select one in the country your in. For example in the US use
us.pool.ntp.org as your server pool of choice.

I forgot to add that the time.nist.gov server may be very busy or simply
unavailable, etc. I just tried pinging time.nist.gov and got a good test. If
you can sync to another server then your good to go. FWIW NTP uses TCP/UDP
Port 123.

Al, thank you for your input. I read a little yesterday on the nist site –
they have quite a lot of info.

I'm trying to learn a little about various aspects of computers (I am a
literate user, but I do not know terribly much about the inner workings) –
where would I open ports? Is Norton Internet Security one place? Anywhere
in Windows?

Hans,

I suggest simply trying another time server or pool server first. If you can
sync with the new server you will not need to open any ports in Norton. If
you can't then I suggest checking the Norton support pages or check the user
guides for Norton for help. I don't personally don't use NIS so that is the
best I can say on that subject. Its possible someone else can help...

Here is a link to a Norton support forum for the NIS product. Hopefully you
can get help opening ports (if needed) there...

Good luck...

Al, it seems as if the Windows own time service works now. It certainly did
not before. Silly that if one time service does not work, Windows would try
another – or maybe it does that. I had only two – I will put a few more in.

Thank you, Al, for your great help.
