Message Body: Tried yesterday to reload Windows XP Home
Edition. Need
certificate of authentisity - COULD NOT find on computer.
Telephoned
your company abouat missing number and was told that I
should telephone
Microsoft for number. Was given the wrong telephone
number. If I call
the number for Microsoft it will be long distance. How am
I responsible
for replacing something that should have come with my
computer when I
ordered it. The number is no where to be found on my
computer. Why
doesn't Gateway contact Microsoft and get number and then
e-mail number
to me? Thanks
Thank you for using Gateway's Online E-mail Support.

REPLY FROM GATEWAY
Ann, from your e-mail I understand that you need the
certificate of
authenticity for reloading Windows XP Home Edition.

I understand your concern with the issue.

Ann, this Microsoft product is sold with a unique product
key. The only
copy of the product key is sent to the customer with the
software.
Gateway does not receive any record of the product keys
that are sent
out. Gateway also has no way to generate or replace a
lost or misplaced
product key. Gateway is only licensed to offer Microsoft
OEM products at
the point of sale. The only option, without the product
key, is to
purchase the software at a retail source such as the
Accessory Store.

I have documented this correspondence in Service Request
Number
2-1594720767 in our contact tracking database. Please use
this number
in the future if you need to contact us again regarding
this issue.

Please reply to this message if you require further
assistance with this
issue.

Thank you.

According to Gateway, the Microsoft Certificate of Authenticity
and Product Key is located on the back or side of a Gateway tower PC.
If you have a notebook PC, flip it over and look on the bottom.

Please read original message and reply from Gateway.
What do you think?

Gateway should have provided a label with the needed Product Key (25
characters in groups of five - like
BF89A-CDFG7-
and so on, on a label physically stuck to the outside of the machine.
So explore - round the back, underneath.. .
