Can someone tell me how to get sound from my XP Home Edition. I downloaded
all the recent updates and expected it to be rectified but no luck. The
computer was re-formatted recently, it seems to be since then.

Downloaded all the recent updates from where? Windows Update? After you
install an operating system, you must install drivers for all your
hardware. It sounds like you forgot to do this. Obtain and install the
drivers for your sound card.

Never get drivers from Windows Update. Get them from:

1. The device mftr.'s website; OR
2. The motherboard mftr.'s website if hardware is onboard; OR
3. The OEM's website for your specific machine if you have an OEM computer
(HP, Dell, Sony, etc.).

Read the installation instructions on the website where you get the drivers.

To find out what hardware is in your computer:

1. Read any documentation you got when you bought the computer.
2. If the computer is OEM, go to the OEM's website for your specific model
machine and look at the specs (you'll be there to get the drivers anyway)
3. Download, install and run a free system inventory program like Belarc
Advisor or System Information for Windows.

If you have installed drivers from Windows Update, you can roll them back:

Did you "re-format" the computer using the restore CD that the
manufacturer provided, or with a retail version of Windows XP? If it
was with the retail version, then chances are you'll need to find and
install the drivers for the sound card. Right click on My Computer
(either on the desktop or in the Start Menu) and go to Properties. Then
click on the hardware tab, and click on Device Manager. Look for any
devices that have a yellow exclamation mark and those are devices that
need drivers.

The best place to go looking for drivers is the web page of the company
that made your computer.

I didn't get a CD with the computer because it had been a display model. I
thought it strange at the time. I have since contact manufacturer and they
sent a disc; I'
l'll try it. Many thanks.

If you "reformatted recently", that usually means that XP was installed, but
the driver disk for the motherboard wasn't used.

You should have another disk for the motherboard that has these drivers. If
not, determining the make and exact model of your PC - or its motherboard -
can help you figure out where to get the correct drivers.
