I load windows XP but in control panel all my options are greyed
out.........Thanks Bob

You need to install "drivers" for most hardware that is not detected
by XP. You should have a CD for the audio device.

It's not the speakers, it's the sound card, which may be part of the
motherboard.

No - Windows XP does not contain the drivers for every piece of hardware
ever made in the past or future. The manuifacturer's of each product are
responsible for making their product work (or choosing not to make it work)
in each operating system that may exist at any point in time.

Having said that - your speakers (unless USB) are just 'dumb devices'. They
are not what needs the interface with the operating system (Windows XP) - it
is the sound card/sound hardware internally - where you plug the speakers
into - that needs the correct drivers installed into the Operating System of
your choice (Windows XP in this case) so that it can communicate properly
with the hardware (sound card) and in-turn, push the sound to whatever 'dumb
device' (speakers, headphones, etc) you have connected to it.

As for what that driver is - we don't know - but you should. On your
receipt, open your computer, contact the manufacturer, look in your manual,
go to the manufacturer's web page for support on your model is something
like a Dell, IBM, HP, etc... and so on.

The speakes are just the "external" piece. They connect to the sound
card that is internal. The sound card must have its correct drivers
installed and then the speakers should work.

a related question: Mine is set right at GMT-5 (he probably didn't set
his reference to GMT.) What I'm curious about is that some places get it
wrong. For instance Skype has me at GMT-4 with the right time, other
sites have me at GMT-5 but a hour off.

Is this because North America changed the Standard Time / Daylight
Savings Time timing and that we are out of sync with the rest of the world?

There are no drivers for speakers and you don't need any for them.
However, you do need drivers for your sound card which is capable of
emitting the sound via your speakers. If the controls are grayed out,
then this suggests that either the speaker connections are the wrong way
round or that your sound card isn't recognized by the OS. Have you
checked in the device manager to see everything piece of equipment is OK?
