'no audio device' when XP reinstalled

I reinstalled XP, and now, when I go to "Sounds and Audio
Devices" > Volume...I get the "No Audio Device" message.
And my speakers don't work through XP. However, all of
my hardware is working. I know this because the CD
player does send sound through the speakers, and when I
plug in my speakers I hear the "crackle of plugging
speakers in."

I followed various procedures online, including removing
the driver -- Creative Audio PCI...then letting the
computer reinstall it.
