After upgrading to XP I lost audio, in the device manager I have several
devices that show comment "can not start" the C-Media AC97 and a device
"isapnp read data port"

How can I fix this? I presume that I need somehow to turn these devices on.

Please help.

Have you downloaded and installed the WinXP-specific audio drivers,
as provided by your sound card's manufacturer?

The drivers need to be upgraded. These can usually be downloaded from
the manufacturer's site. (motherboard or PC).
