After SP3,no audio device.Device manager shows yellow exclamation marks on
kernel devices(error code 42) Also get ISAPNP in system devices.When I
reinstall driver of ISAPNP the ISAPNP entry and the kernel conflicts
disappear and a fourth software enumerator appears.I can delete this but
after a restart it all goes back to how it was.Have tried various fixes found
on web,e.g. copying machine.inf file and removing line 20,ensure audio
service is started etc.Have loaded drivers from ASUS.Do I need to change the
registry KB888111 entry or should the latest SP3 be correct for UAA now? Or
do I need to do what was advised to Janice by Arttoglass in "no sound after
XP install" thread?

You don't say what device you're using.

Code 42, according to MS, occurs when there is a conflict between 2
identical devices. If you didn't uninstall before re-installing, in
otherwords you intalled on top of the old drivers then chances are you have
a conflict as per what MS says.

My 2 cents :

1) un-install ALL references to your sound device, both harware and
software. Turn off PC and physically take out PC card or unplug USB device.

2) re-boot but go into the BIOS and turn off the on-board audio device, if
thats what you have

3) save and let XP boot. Check to make sure you've no left-over bits of
sound device related software hanging around (use CC CLeaner, for example to
clean out the registry)

4) download the latest drives, XP specific (you may have already done this).
Turn off PC and install your PC card (if thats what you have).

5) Boot, going into the BIOS and turing on your device and let XP find it
(same for PC card). If USB device wait until boot-up has finished, then plug
it in.

6) XP will detect the sound device. Install your downloaded drivers, bo not
interupt the process or you may corrupt the drivers.

7) Re-boot and you should have sound.

Thanks Jerry,device is Soundmax digital audio.The code 42 is for duplicate
devices which show greyed out in device manager when searching using the "set
show_nonpresent_ devices=1" in command prompt.(another handy tip from
different thread!) When deleted they get reinstalled after restart.I will try

Right Click on My Computer > Properties > Enviroment Variables > New >
Variable Name = Show all > Variable Value = DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES >
Value = 1 > OK and better to re-boot.

Next time you call up the Device Manager and chose View > Show all (or
something like that) you'll also get a list of those devices that are not
connected. You can delete them if you don't use them or the entry is
outdated. (You can recognise them because they are light grey in colour).

Thanks.Sound device is a little pink cube shaped module which doesn't look
like it unplugs but then as it's called integrated I assume that's correct
(?) Tried uninstalling absolutely everything connected with audio & switching
on then off again in BIOS but after restart,all the duplicate mskernel stuff
is back again.Reg cleaner didn't spot anything amiss in the registry.Any way
I can stop the unwanted stuff so I can get my sound back? Discard
screwdriver.....now where's that lump hammer?....
