If it's a built-in adapter, then it could be disabled in the BIOS.
If it's an add-on PCI card, then it might be improperly seated.
If it's an USB adapter, then the system couldn't recognize the USB
controller.
Any of adapters could be dead.
There can be Unknown device or Ethernet adapter or other media adapter in
DeviceManager.
