Newsreader PROBLEMS!

B

Bill Prady

I'm running Outlook 2003.

The "news" choice was missing from my menu, so I attempted to add it. I
discovered it wasn't (as indicated in the help file) available when I went
to customize menus.

So, I started Outlook Express directly. It informed me that it wasn't the
default newsreader. When I clicked to make it the default newsreader, I was
now able to add the choice to the Outlook 2003 menu.

HOWEVER...

The choice disappeared, I was not able to add it and I went back to Outlook
Express which informed me, once again, that it was not the default
newsreader. In fact, I discovered, every time I launch it, it tells me it
isn't.

I don't use any other newsreader. Why won't the system record this choice
permanently?

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.
