Add Newsreader to my Outlook Folder List ./ Outlook Bar

Izzard

Currently everytime I want to access the newsreader from my outlook 2002
(SP3), I have to

VIEW->GO TO->NEWS.

Is there a way to permanently add the newsreader to my default outlook
Folder List or Bar so it is all on one page (email and news) evertime I
start outlook up?

Thanks

You could just load Outlook Express since it supports NNTP (network news
transfer protocol). Outlook does not support NNTP and ends up simply
loading Outlook Express to do newsgroups. Why bother opening Outlook to
wade through its menues only to end up loading Outlook EXPRESS and being
over there when you could've started Outlook Express in the first place?

You could customize a toolbar in Outlook to include a button for View ->
Go To but you would still have to pick News from the drop-down list.
When customizing, there is a News object listed under the Web category
but I'm not sure that is the same News function to load OE to do
newsgroups. It could end up taking you to the webnews-for-dummies
Microsoft Communities site. Try it and see. When I did, OE got focus
because it was already open (to read your post and reply to it) so it
might be a one-button way of loading OE from Outlook.

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

Is there now a News toolbar button in Outlook 2003 (without having to
customize the toolbar from its install-time defaults)? As like the OP,
I also use Outlook 2002 and it doesn't come with a News button in the
toolbar unless you customize the toolbar to add it. I'm not sure a
pointer could be added to the Outlook Bar or to the folders list unless
you knew the HTML to use and changed the default home page for the
"folder" shown in the tree pane to which you could also add a link in
the Outlook Bar. I figured a News button in a toolbar was just as good
or better.

The OP was asking how *not* to have to navigate through the menus to use
the News function (under the View -> Go To -> News" navigation). It
didn't sound like the item was missing but instead that the OP wanted a
faster and easier way of accessing it. It was there under the menus, as
the OP stated, but the OP wanted it somewhere else, like a quickly
clickable toolbar button.

Users have always been able to move the News command to Outlook's Menu Bar.

Yep, by customizing the existing toolbar(s) or by creating a new toolbar
with the button(s). The default is NOT to include a News button.
Sometimes a user forgets or does not know to check the context menus
(and for which object) when trying to find some functionality within a
product. Outlook always having a feature doesn't mean a user knows
about it. Glad to see the OP got the solution(s) needed.

Right, but the simple answer was just drag the News command to Outlook's
Menu bar.
That's all the OP needed.
For 99% of Outlook 2003 users, these questions arise because that News
command disappears. Microsoft changed the way users need to configure the
default news reader but didn't bother to tell anyone. That was the issue in
the 2 posts immediately following this one, and is number one on the hit
parade here.

I just had to reinstall everything and, somehow, lost the New item in the
"go" dropdown. Trying your method to get it back, I opened "control panel"
and have no tabs nor is there anything close to looking like a tab nor is
there anything about Programs or Internet Options. Is this the control
panel from which one adds and removes programs or am I misinterpreting what
you mean by "control panel?

Thanks,
Tim

The Control Panel program doesn't have tabs but the Internet Options
applet does. Open the Control Panel and then open the Internet Options
applet shown within. You can also start Internet Options by directly
running the applet (inetcpl.cpl) instead of looking for an icon for it
in Control Panel.

The Control Panel shows lots of separate applets. The Add/Remove
Programs applet (appwiz.cpl) to which you refer is just one of many. If
you still cannot find the Control Panel, use the Start -> Help and
Support menu to get information on it. For me, it's found under
Start -> Settings.
