Sorry if this has been asked before, I did try searching.

Using Windows Mail on Vista Business SP1.
Version 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205)
(But I remember this same issue on Outlook Express)

Some newsgroups, like microsoft.public.cert.itpro.mcitp always show as
having unread messages. The bottom status bar will say something like '151
message(s), 0 unread, 23 not downloaded'. So, I do a catch up, and the next
time it updates, it shows as having unread messages again, but it won't
download them.

I like to think I'm not totally stupid (ok, maybe wishfull thinking), but I
just don't get it.

Thanks in advance to anyone reading this.

You may need to click on Tools, then Get Next 300 Headers a few
times to get any messages that didn't download the first time.

Also, you may need to rick click on the newsgroup name in the
folders list, then click on Synchronization Settings, then New
Messages Only.

In my experience, that setting (under Tools, Options, Read) often results in
some news messages never getting downloaded. I recommend unchecking it,
especially so for broadband users.

They are Known as "Ghost Messages", this occurs when the synchronization
between OE and or WM, and the news server count goes wrong, eventually the
server will be reset and all will be normal, for a few days :-)

Surely you also noticed that WM also tells you it is downloading message No
298 of 73 messages etc?

Well, I have tried everything. I even unsubscribed, deleted the cache file,
resubscribed (with the option not checked for downloading 300 messages at a
time), tried all of the synchronization settings, yet these groups continue
to say there are messages not downloaded. It just seemed like such a simple
concept that I must have been missing something obvious.

Thanks to everyone who offered advice.

When I see such a problem, it often helps to click Tools, then Get Next
however many Headers a few times. You may have to do this more than
the number of times you would expect when you see how many messages
it downloads each time.

I set it to 500. The group has a total of less than 300 messages, hitting
the 'get next' multiple times does not change any numbers. If I subscribe
to a large group such as microsoft.public.windows.vista.general which has
32000 some odd messages currently, everytime I hit 'get next' headers, the
count of not downloaded goes down about 500, so that part is working
correctly. But on selected groups, the count gets to some number and won't
download anymore. It is just an annoyance I'll have to live with I guess :(

Thanks again for your comments.

You're welcome.

If you uncheck the option completely, you will get all the messages. If you
set any number and have the option checked, you will not get all the
messages.

Its a bug and has been a bug since OE4 days.

This is my point. I have tried with the option completly cleared, I have
tried with it set at 500, I have tried all combinations with the sync
settings, etc.

Just now, I unsubscribed and closed Windows mail. I then deleted the cache
file from \documents and settings\john\application data\yadayadayada. I
then opened Windows mail with the option unset (to get all). I subscribed
to the group and immediately it said... 206 message(s), 206 unread, 3 not
downloaded. I clicked on 'get next headers' several times, the numbers did
not change. I did a catch-up, it marked them all read, and the group name
changed to not bolded. I then went to another group and then came back to
this group, and it immediately said '206 message(s), 0 unread, 3 not
downloaded', and it bolded the name. The group name is
microsoft.public.cert.itpro.mcts. As a matter of fact, now it says 7 not
downloaded (it said 3 a few minutes ago). This happens both with Windows
Mail, and Outlook Express 6

Thanks

Thanks Steve. I just wanted to be sure the problem wasn't user/client side.
These particular groups that I have the issue with have been like this for a
long time, and I don't know how often the servers get 'reset' as you say.

Thanks again,

John R

Its a known bug that only shows up occasionally. Unfortunately there is
nothing you can do about it and MS has turned a deaf ear to those who have
complained (the MVPs and others). One of many such situations.
