Incoming mails lost in Windows Mail

Burton

Hi guys,

I am using ver. 6.0.6000.16386 (vista_rtm.061101-2205).
I have just had a test done and noticed that on my webmail from my provider
there are 7 messages in the inbox. But when I download to Windows Mail, only
4 of the 7 actually come in!!?

Is there a known bug or something (e.g. problem with the junkfilter?)
There is no set rule from this sender and I have suspected since this
several weeks now, so I would have noticed if a rule had misplaced them. Is
there a logfile or something to look back on or a freeware tool I could
download for diagnostics?

This is my last resort, otherwise I'll have to download thunderbird and
neglect this unreliable Windows Mail programm...

Cheers, Burton

there could be a corrupt file, but ask Gary VanderMullen. He'll Know!!!

Perhaps there is an issue with that 5th email, corrupt or very large. Try
deleting that one email from your webmail service and see if the other two
come on down.

No it wasnt large, I saw it in the webmail it was just a simple text file.
The strange this was though, that she sent me the 7 emails again and it was
exactly those 4 that came again and the same were missing on the 2nd trial.

Cya later...

I always read everything that's posted here. I saw your earlier post but could
not come up with a response worth posting.
When only 4 of 7 messages download, that is usually due to a 'stuck' or
corrupted email on the server, but that is always accompanied by a time-out
error message. Since you did not mention any error message, I figured it
had to be something else.
Do the same 4 messages download everytime you connect with the server?

So, did you try deleting the 5th one from your webmail access ? If there is
something wrong with that one, it is possible the other two will download
just fine once you get rid of #5 . . . . . .

You may have to live without email #5. Unless she can recreate a new email
with that info and resend it to you - and depending on what's in it (an
attachment or something that may be corrupt) - it may still cause issues on
your end if created new and resent.

Yes, as said the person sent me the messages she sent me in the last few
weeks twice, and both times it was the same 4 messages that came and the
same 3 that got lost.
I think Kerianne was on the right track by thinking it could be corrupt.

Whats the best way to reinstall Windows Mail (do I have the latest version?)
and will all my folders and emails be kept if reinstalled?
What about the rules I have, will they be lost? Maybe try a repair function
first?

Try compacting and repairing the database using my Windows Mail Utility
(www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/). That will fix the message counter if it is the
issue. Otherwise, you can try removing the mail account, closing and
reopening WinMail and then add the mail account back again. Also ensure
that some 3rd party program is not interfering (see point 3 here:
www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3).

No it was just an example.

I seem to be losing several emails, also from different senders, since the
past few weeks.
What about the solutions I thought that may help... ?

Okay, so delete the offending email - whatever number it is . . . . . .

Now you say you are "losing several emails - multiple senders" which was not
part of the original complaint that I recall . . . . . . are they lost - or
interfering with download?

Try Steve Cochran's utility he just mentioned. Many users report success
with it.

In the three years I have worked this newsgroup, I don't recall
seeing reports of the particular symptom you are seeing.
Windows Mail either works or it doesn't, and when it doesn't
the cause is wrong settings or a non-compatible antivirus.

There is no built-in repair function, and Windows Mail can't be
reinstalled without reinstalling all of Vista. A corrupt message
database can be repaired by using Steve's utility, WMUtil:
http://www.oehelp.com/WMUtil

If still no improvement, I recommend upgrading to Windows
Live Mail: http://download.live.com/wlmail
It will automatically import all your WM settings, accounts,
rules and emails.

HI~
Try going to Actions | Junk E-mail | Safety options. go to the Safe & Blocked Senders tabs. Make certain that there aren't any e-mails there that you know that r in the Blocked tab.

UPDATE:
Many thanks Steve and Gary. I've just tested sending myself two emails that
I received on another account at work and transfered it to my Windows Mail
account.
The funny thing is, I noticed that at the bottom right Windows Mail informs
you of how many incoming mail you receive (very helpful in my case!)
So now I could tell that it said 3 new messages, but I only received one...
The other two emails (which I sent myself) did not arrive in my Inbox!
(normally I receive emails that I pass onto myself from that other email
address from work)

SOLUTIONS:
Would compacting and repairing the database using Windows Mail Utility
(www.oehelp.com/WMUtil/) help in this instance, seing as the incoming email
count is correct?
You say that progamm will fix the message counter if it is the issue, but
the "counter" (if you mean the incoming messages count as I mentioned above)
is correct?

So should I now try removing the mail account, closing and reopening WinMail
and then add the mail account back again? Or upgrade directly to the free
Windows Live Mail?
I would prefer to try and solve this issue, now that we know that the emails
do actually show as arrived.... How could I filter the emails for the whole
programm?

Quote: Also ensure that some 3rd party program is not interfering (see
point 3 here: www.oehelp.com/OETips.aspx#3):
- I dont compact my emails when exiting the program, do you think this could
actually cause the disappearances, or otherwise not even be an error
possibility? (no background compaction neither)
- The email scanning cant be an issue of my AVG free antivirus, if Windows
Mail actually tells me the right number of new mails, can it?
- You have some good tips on that webpage steve, though mainly for OE. I
didnt know that the databases are so easily corruptive... or is that only
concerning Outlook Express?
(The Outlook Express dbx file structure is notorious for corruption even
without antivirus software)

I think we are getting nearer to the problem solution now.
Awaiting your further help,

Kind regards,
Burton.

If the incoming message count is correct, then WM may be placing the
missing emails into a folder other than Inbox. Have you looked in the
Junk E-mail and Deleted Items folders? Also make sure that under your
Junk E-mail options you have not enabled the 'Permanently delete..." setting.

S

Steve Cochran

Also make sure one hasn't somehow added oneself to the blocked senders list.

Hi Gary + Steve,

Yes the incoming message count seems to be correct. Obviously I checked in
the junkmail and deleted items - nothing.
The junk email option "permanently delete" is unchecked.

"Also make sure one hasn't somehow added oneself to the blocked senders
list. steve"
--> if someone was added to the blocked senders list, then neither this
person who sends me them nor I would receive ANY emails.

So this problem of emails that disappear is still unsolved....
