each time i go back to a ng, it pulls up new posts (of course) and some old
ones and says they are "unread" even tho i've already marked them as read!
and it's just random ones. no pattern to it at all. is this a windows xp
problem?

anyone have a clue?

This is not a WindowsXP problem.
It is a problem with your newsreader.

By the way, "newsgroups" do not "pull up new posts". This is accomplished
by your "newsreader".

Check with the supplier of your newsreader for help. You can also check in
the Outlook Express options to make sure you have set it to mark all
messages read when you navigate out of a newsgroup.
Do this:
1) Click on "Tools|Options".
2) Click on the "Read" tab.
3) Make sure "Mark message read after displaying for [0] seconds" under
"Reading Messages" is checked. You can set the number of seconds you want
messages to be marked "Read" automatically here.
4) Make sure "Mark all messages as read when exiting a newsgroup." under
"News" is checked.
5) "Ok" out of the dialog.
