Newbie Questions... Need Help Please

Hi there, I have few newbie questions. I've done a bit of reading and
going through some tutorials, I thought I was ready to make movies but I
ran into some unexpected issues. Maybe someone could help me out?

1. When I "Capture from video device" and choose the radio button
titled "Digital Device Format (DV-AVI) . OR . From the radio button
titled "other settings" and I choose "DV-AVI (NTSC)" or "High Quality
Video (NTSC)" the results are that my video saves, it just winds up all
choppy. The audio AND video wind up choppy. However, if I just save it
to some low level setting like ".wmv" for viewing on my computer or
something, then it saves just fine.

I want to burn my home videos to DVD so I'm thinking I want the highest
possible quality when I'm recording from my camcorder. I should be able
to do this and I can't seem to be able to. It's frustrating.

2. No matter what level or format I capture my video on, when I go
to edit the frames.. I bring them down to the story board to edit, they
won't show in the main editing window. It's black, and remains black.
I can hear my frame playing when I hit play, but I can't see it on the
main editing window. the big window.

I'm just trying to work through these two issues right now, but I was
wondering if anyone would be able to help me out.

Thanks in advance,

YahYah

Hi Yah Yah....If i read you right in #1 you were able to save a movie in
DV-AVI right...thats good. If it previewed correctly in Movie Maker, it
will most likely be just fine....the resultant saved movie doesn't play well
in my media player either, but it will be full quality if you burn it to a
dvd. I always save the movie to DV-AVI for burning and then delete it, but
I also save to High Quality NTSC if i want to save it and view it on my
computer.

Your #1 question confuses me, since you say you cannot bring your clips to
the timeline to edit them....but I thought you said in #1 that you DID make a
movie?
If you are talking about additional clips, it might be that they are in Mpeg
format which doesn't work in Movie Maker. You should convert to AVI first.

Good luck with Movie Maker, you will really like it once you get the hang of
it. Don't give up on it if it is frustrating at first.....they are always
ways to work around most problems, and this site is a good place to
start.....read all the questions and comments!

Thanks for responding... let me clarify in case anyone else is having
issues understanding me also... it'd be better if I could just "show
you" lol ;) but "explaining" will have to do!

1. When I try and capture in DV-AVI format, the resultant "capture" is
choppy, both with audio and video. There is NO way I can work with what
I wind up capturing.

When I change the capture format to something smaller, NON DV-AVI, it
captures just fine. No choppiness or anything like that. The problem
is, I want to burn these home movies to DVD and so I can't be capturing
them in lesser quality.

2. My #2 problem is that, no matter what capture quality I capture my
segments in, I can NOT edit them. The window where the video should
play shows me nothing but "Black screen".

I capture the video. I take the frame I want to edit, I drag it to the
time line, and then I click "play". The Main Video Window shows me
nothing but "black". I can hear my frame playing, as the audio is
intact, but there is absolutely no video.

I also have Pinnacle Plus, the latest version. I can capture and edit
just fine on Pinnacle. I used it as a comparison, as in "perhaps there's
something wrong with my camcorder or memory or something" but it's
working the way it should on Pinnacle.

I'm at a loss, and to be straight up honest, I'm less than "fluent" in
this technical stuff ;) I like to point, click, and be awed. Lol.. For
the most part, I AM impressed with Movie Maker, I hope to eventually be
MORE impressed when it starts working as it's supposed to... when I can
figure out how to get it to perform the tasks needed to create a movie.

Thank you so much for your help, I it is much appreciated

Check to see what your transfer mode is on the drive you are capturing on. If
for some reason it is less than Ultra DMA 5, your video will be choppy.
