new win2k server domain

Hi all,

My company is going to migrate to win2k server. Existing
we have a NT 4 server (domain). 2 machines loaded with
win98, 1 machine 95, 4 machines loaded win2k professional.

My question: Can I just install a new pc with win2k server
and then remove the NT 4.0 machine? I'm planning to use AD
on the new server. As for Winnt 4.0, we are going to use
as a file server only.

What would happen if I do in this way? Where can I find
these resource? What will happens to my domain user?
Please advise.

Doing it this way will create a new domain. You will have to recreate your
users and join them to the new domain and figure out how to move their
profile to the new domain.

You can remove Win 2k from the new server, install NT 4.0 on it as a BDC
while connected to your existing network, promote to PDC (demotes your
existing PDC to BDC) then upgrade to Win 2k and AD.

You will have a mixed mode Win 2k domain, your original NT 4.0 PDC is now a
NT 4.0 BDC, you will not have to recreate or join your users to the new
domain because you actually upgraded the domain.

Hi Thanks!

However, our existing server consider an old server which
we do not want to install win2k on it. That's why we
bought another new pc for our new server.

You might want to re read my post.
In the situation I outlined you do not have to touch your existing PDC.
From my post:
In this situation your existing PDC is demoted to BDC automatically when you
promote the newly installed NT 4.0 BDC to PDC. You do not have to upgrade
your original PDC to Win 2k, you can leave your original PDC (now BDC) as a
NT 4.0 BDC with the new server as a Win 2k DC.
If your existing PDC can run NT 4.0 as a PDC it can run it as a BDC also it
does not have to be upgraded.
