new win xp installation

P

Peggy

Hi,

I previously had Win 2k and Win Me installed on 1
partition, I now would want to do a new installion of win
xp on that partition. I thought a new installation of xp
deletes all programs or system files from previous
installation. However, the xp set up had actually
installed xp on the same partition as win 2k and win Me
without removing the previous oses. Can anyone tell me
why? I have another partition that stores all the data
and so, I do not want to format my hard disk. I now have
4 GB left on my c drive and I was trying to create
another partition via disk management, but it does not
have the feature that allows me to do that.

Help, would anyone tell me what I should do now?

Thanks in advance,
Peggy

When you booted form the Windows XP CD to install it and followed the
prompts until it asked you which partition to install on, did you DELETE the
partitions shown and create a new one to install on or did you choose an
existing one?

If you choose an existing one, it uses the existing partition.

I chose an existing one. So, am I supposed to delete the
current system partition and do the installation from
there?

Please clarify, I do not want to screw up anything.

Thanks in advance,
Peggy

Reading your opriginal post, this is what you will want to do to get an
actual CLEAN install but leave your data (on the D:\ drive) intact:

*Cautionary word of warning* Even with the best laid out plans, things can
and DO go wrong. Backup the really important stuff of yours first.. Burn it
to CD, copy it to another machine, another physical hard drive - something.
Don;t forget your favorites and email is usually stored in your user
profiles. Unless you moved it, My Documents is also on the C drive..

Boot from the Installation Windows XP CD.
Follow through the prompts like you were installing (you are!)
(The next step will erase everything on your C partition.. EVERYTHING.)
When it asks you which partition to install on, choose to DELETE the old C:
partition..
Create a new partition where that one was.
If asked, format the partition NTFS Quick. (You've been using it, if you
haven't had problems, no need to do the full format.)
Continue with the Install..

That should get you Windows XP installed, your D Drive intact.. Worst case -
if it was NTFS before - you may have to TAKE OWNERSHIP of the files/folders
on that drive in order to access them.
