Hi Ron, After doing some research I deleted the account, rebooted, typed
"control passwords2" and the box requiring users to create passwords was
UNchecked. I left it as is, created a new account without a password and
tried to switch user and login.
The login flashes the desktop for a split-second and then brings me back
to
the login screen. A reboot did not change anything. Assigning a password
does
not seem to have any effect.
Any other ideas come to mind?
Hi "KTC",
Your first message mentioned you are using XP Home Edition. What Service
Pack? SP3? I'm using XP-Pro-SP3, and I'm not clear on what all is different
between the 2 editions relative to User Accounts and Logons, so some of my
observations might not apply. (Is "passwords2" above, a typo for
"userpasswords2"?)
To try things out, I just created another user account on my computer, from
the Control Panel> User Accounts program. Then went to Start> Run "control
userpasswords2", and changed the new account to the Power Users Group. And I
UNchecked the box requiring passwords. I took a break for awhile, meanwhile
the screen saver came on after 7 minutes, and when I touched a key to cancel
it, surprise, I was at the login screen. I wasn't paying attention, so
didn't notice if it flashed the desktop for a split-second before the login
screen appeared. I checked Desktop Properties, Screen Saver tab, and there
was a checkmark in "On resume, display Welcome screen", which I promptly
unchecked. It wasn't checked before I created the new user account. That
setting might be related to your problem, except you are trying to login,
not resume from screen saver. I already had, and still have, Fast User
Switching enabled. You might trying disabling and re-enabling that. There
are certainly some strange happenings associated with creating user
accounts. I would have never thought that creating an account would change a
setting in the screen saver tab of Display Properties. I also checked
Control Panel> Power Options> Power Schemes and it was still set to turn off
Monitor after 15 minutes, and everything else set to Never. Whether or not
your computer is on a domain might make a difference how some things work
too. Mine is a workgroup setup, not domain.
