new user, background change

How do I change the background on a new slide without it changing previous
slides. I have looked and am completely stuck, duh moment. thanks
 
Right-click the slide background (make sure you are not inside any other
object), click "Background", click the dropdown arrow and change it to
another color, or click "Fill Effects" to choose other options. You might
want to also click the "Omit background graphics from master" if your master
slide design has any, then click the "Apply" button (NOT the "Apply to all"
button).
