Have successfully installed XP Home on a new partition on my HD. The older
partition has W98SE on it. Questions:

1) Have tried to turn on the XP firewall but cannot find the ON/OFF
switches, though I followed the Help instructions.

2) Spell checker isn't there - in OE Express. Is that because I have not
yet reinstalled MS Office?

3) Can see - with Windows Explorer - all my files on the W98SE partition (I
set up my XP partition with FAT32). Does that mean that I:

can copy/move some of them from 98 to XP?

can run exe's on the 98 partition from XP?

Thank you,

1) Firewall is part of the Network configuration. Access the network
configuration and you should be able to turn it on from there.

2) Spell check is not directly part of OE. You need to have Office install
to activate this (normally). There are registry patches to enable spell
check when you do not have Office.

3) You can only copy file back/from Windows 98SE only. You can not run any
EXEs from the Windows 98SE partition, since it s not guaranteed that the
EXEs are correctly installed into the XP registry/paths (they were install
in Windows 98SE partition). Also, since Windows 98SE can on see FAT32
partitions, most of the EXEs are running off C: and not D:(??) when XP is
active.

Yes. Spellchecker comes from the office products.

Yes

can run exe's on the 98 partition from XP?

Probably not as they are installed in win98 not xp.

HOW TO Enable or Disable Internet Connection Firewall in Windows XP

Outlook Express, as you've just discovered, has no spell-checking
capabilities of its own. Instead, it relies upon the presence of
other Microsoft applications, such as the Office Suite, Word, or the
Works _Suite_ (which includes Word, not the regular Works). There are
also some 3rd-party shareware/freeware solutions available at any of
the many shareware sites on the Internet

Spell Magic seems well thought-of, though I haven't tried it myself:

Thank you, all.

Another question/remark:

I am dismayed that Windows XP Home does not come with a backup utility!

If you bought a retail copy, then it is on the CD in Tools\MSoft\Backup
- r-click ion the .msi file there and take install.

Many (most?) OEM installations with new machines leave it out
