delete partition

Have two partitions on my 20GB HD, and XP/W98SE dual-boot:

Computer Management:
E: Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy (Boot) Logical drive XP Home
C: Partition Basic FAT32 Healthy(System) Primary partition W98SE

At first, I could get into 98 as well as into XP. No longer, although I am presented with the choice at boot-up, I can not get into 98. Cannot get into DOS either. I do not need W98 anymore, XP running nicely.

I would like to get rid of the W98 (C:) partition - and, preferably, give the space back to the XP partition. How can I do that, safely, from XP (E:)?

Thank you,

As far as I know, there is no way to extend a partition.
You would have to destroy the existing ones and make one
big one.

You can't do what you want.
Once you install XP to a partition besides C:, the Registry has references
to XP being on a another partition.
The only way to move XP to C: is to reinstall.
No third party software will move XP to C:. :-(
You will have to keep XP on E:.
Alter the boot.ini file to remove the 98 reference.
You can put the boot files on E:, alter the boot.ini file, and make E: the
active partition.

Thank you. If I do what you suggest would I then be able to, safely, format
the C:(W98) partition, i.e., get rid of W98, keep XP on E: and use C: for
files, etc.?

Be careful, XP most likely is boot strapping from your C: drive. If you
format it you may destroy XP's boot files and your comp's ability to
boot into *any* OS without a reinstall or at least a repair. If there
are boot.ini, ntdetect.com and ntdlr files present on that partition
then its a good bet that is where the comp initially boot straps from.
Only after the initial boot is control passed to the code on your XP
partition. It may be possible to place these files on your XP partition
but and then make it the active partition but its not easy and is highly
dependent on your BIOS and how far from the begining of the drive the XP
partition is physically placed. For it to work at all the XP partition
must be a primary, MS does not support boot strapping directly from an
extended partition.
