new to VPN

Hi,

I have set up VPN on my W2003 server with default settings in most cases and
again on my XP laptop.

If I try to open a VPN connection, I get a message saying Connecting to xyz
and then one saying verifying username nad password which stays on the
screen for 5 - 10 seconds and then I get a redailing in 60 seconds screen
error # is 721 and it says the remote computer didn't respond.

I have set my firewall to allow 3 types of VPN connection (all that were
listed) so I'm losst now!

I CAN use Remote Desktop Connection back to my server and also see OWA so I
know the basic connection is OK.

Any advice appreciated.

It could be the GRE issue. Do you have a router?

Yes, a Netgear DG834G. I have created rules to allow for VPN using the Netgear pre-defined settings, these allow UDP 500 and UDP 1701 to pass through.

Assuming you are using PPTP, you should open the port 1723.
