New SATA hard drive BSoD error

S

I have been working on this off and on for the last three days and it
is driving me crazy!

I replaced a failed hard drive on a Dell Dimension 8400

I installed the sata driver and was able to install WinXP Home from
the restore CD.

However, when the system restarted at the end of the install I got the
BSoD ...
Stop 0x0000007B or INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE

When I go into bios it recognizes the hard drive

If you replaced the failed drive with the same type...
just try using the restore cd by itself...
it should already contain the correct drivers.

BTW: How did you determine the original drive was bad?
there is the possibility that some other hardware was at fault. (Such as
RAM)

I ran the system diagnostics and everything passed except the hard
drive which kept failing. I also tested the RAM by removing one stick
at a time and had the same result.

It wasn't the same brand hard drive. The original was a Maxtor, this
one was Western digital. So I guess I shouldn't have used the restore
disk.

Now when I try to reformat and re-install WinXP, even with an OEM
copy, it says it doesn't recognize a hard drive - so I can't get to
the format stage.

The difference in hard drive manufacturer's won't cause the problem you are
seeing. If your version of XP doesn't contain SP2 then it won't recognize a
SATA drive. You will need a floppy with the SATA drivers to satisfy the
demand.

This may have been stated but was the original drive SATA? If not, that
is the problem.

The original drive was SATA. I do have a copy of WinXP SP2, but now I
can't get it to the point where it will let me install it. I put the
CD in the drive and boot from it, but it always says there is no hard
drive recognized. Is there something I can do to get it to allow me
to install it.

Several odd thoughts for you.

have you checked the new drive with the diagnostics at We4stern Digital?

Cable connection is ok?

When I replaced my original Maxtor drive, I used Acronis 9 Image pgm.
I imaged the old drive (C & D partitions, to another drive and then
followed the insstructions to swap the drives and put the image on the
new drive.

Course, your problem is to get the new drive to work. Did you format and
set it up properly.
If you have a partition pgm, look at the drive with it.

Wish I could help you more.

What did you set all the BIOS settings to for the new HD? Auto? Not
familiar with SATA so setup maybe different.

I think I used the diagnostics tools from the old hard drive. I will
look to download the ones from WD. I ran all the tools and the only
error was on the original hard drive, none on the new one. I didn't
change any of the settings in the BIOS, it automatically found the new
hard drive. And i can't get to the device manager because i can't get
windows to boot - I wish I could get that far! Thanks for all the
suggestions!

Okay, I found on the WD site that, if the drive was SATA2 and the
controller was only SATA, a jumper was needed on the drive. I can't
be certain if it is as the case for this system is one of those that
folds open making it impossible to find identifiable codes on the
system board. Anyway, I put the jumper on the pins that it said to.
It did let me re-format and re-install windows again. However, when
Windows xp gets to the point where it needs to reboot, it just goes
into a loop - getting to the screen that says the computer was shut
down incorrectly do you want to start in safe mode... no matter which
option, it just reboots back to this screen. Any other suggestions?

Thanks for all the suggestions, I don't feel so alone on this!

Success! I flashed the bios and then reinstalled the OS. It is now
up and running. Thanks all - especially bud!

The simplest thing my be to call tech spt at WD. They use to be
helpful:>)

I would print the manual for the Dell Dimension 8400. Probably on one of
the cds from dell.
I guess you could call dell but ask in a separate post if anyone knows
this answer on the dell news group, or their forum, if there is one.
In fact, try to simplify the problem with sufficient detail and post in
the Dell news group. Some helpful and knowlegble people there.
Once you know that the drive is configured properly, the rest is the
install of xp, and the rebooting.
if it will boot to safe mode, do that and see what happens.

Good news.
If you still have only 512GB RAM, I`d go to 1GB.
Enlighten me on flashing the BIOS? You came across a newer BIOS versaion
I guess.

Brief Description
The Windows XP startup disk allows computers without a bootable CD-ROM
