You shouldn't need to use any software from any ISP to create a
broadband connection - all you need are the log-in details....

Err - He shouldn't need software <sigh> but he Err might. Err.

Hi,

Are you saying that Win7 will know all about my orange livebox and have
all its settings etc already installed ?, (except for my username &
password) ?

If so, this is wonderful news !

KK

I believe what he is telling you that setup of a broadband modem can
generally be accomplished with a web browser - vista7 will have a
browser, won't it?

If it's already setup and functioning, it is generally sufficient to plug
in a new computer and boot it - anymore, they are usually configured to
get an IP address via DHCP without further fiddling - at least Linux
works that way - how backward do you expect 7 to be?

Wow - With that $14k a week that comes in, it's good to know that you
are a PC tech in your town. That money must come in handy to supplement
the imaginary $14k the tooth fairy leaves you.

Not imaginary and not from the tooth fairy. The fact that you believe in
a tooth fairy writes volumes about you, little boy.
Imagine, moving a disk from one computer to another computer! It
works. Imagine that. I wonder if that can be done with Windows?

Not without a whole lot of work unless the specs of the new computer are
exactly the same as the old one. You'll have to do a repair install that
may or may not work and if, for example, you have XP SP3 installed but
only have an XP SP2 disk, you will also have to slipstream the SP 3 into
XP. Chances are you'll have to do a clean install and reinstall all the
programs, updates and devices.
Of
course it can but the difference is that the Windows disk contains
actual work where the Ubuntu disk contains PORN.

I use my Ubuntu install for real work that results in a whole lot of
money every day. Oops. I have no need or use for porn. As a wise man
once said, "Sex is not a spectator sport".

BFD. The world runs on Windows products. So you moved a drive from one computer to another.
By the way, I installed Windows 7 on another computer last night and it took 15 minutes. I
didn't need a sound CD, video CD, motherboard CD. Just the Windows 7 DVD.

I then installed Microsoft Office 2007 in about 5 minutes and everything was up and running.

Good job Microsoft!

With no CD?

How about Nero?

PhotoShop?

AutoCAd?

Etc.?
Good job Microsoft!

Yeah, it plays videos games pretty well but that's about it. The eye
candy is a lame imitation of Apple and Compiz.

Caveat - I've not done it on Vista, so I'm not sure if or how it could
be done on a post-XP Windows OS.

Even if a repair could be accomplished (Vista is very different),
virtually all of the programs would still need to be reinstalled.

I understand that Vista is different, can you not do a repair install
(I've never needed to), and if you can, is it *that* destructive? It
hasn't been the case in XP and previous - a repair install leaves the
registry largely intact and doesn't disturb non-Windows files.

Vista is NOT like XP. Everything will need to be reinstalled.

Hi,

I'm not sure what a 'router' is, but it's the box that Orange sent me when I
went onto broadband. It has a red cable to the pc and a grey cable to the
filter which in turn plugs into the telephone socket, also a mains power
suppy. It doesnt have any wireless capability (at least I dont think it
does). I had to 'install' it by running a program on a disk that Orange
sent. (It also has a socket for a telephone so that I could make phone calls
via the net if I wanted to, (I dont)).

A router would allow you to plug several computers into it. It sounds
like this box is some kind of modem, translating between ethernet
(computer side) and DSL signal (telephone side).

OK,

so does that mean that win 7 will automatically detect it & install it ?

Thanks again
