New PC + exsisiting speakers = very low sound

Hi. recently purchased a new base unit which is working swimmingly, but have encountered a prob with my speakers. On my old PC they worked fine for what they were (stand alone speakers plugged in at the back) but on my new PC the sound is extremely low (just about able to hear an audible conversation). This is with every volumne setting i can find at max. whats the problem? duff speakers or incorrect audio setting on new PC?
Help appreciated
 
Rightclick the volume icon (bottom of screen, next to clock) and clic
Adjust Audio Properties. Click the Speaker Volume button and mov
the sliders to "High", click Apply and OK.
 
i have done that but its still incredibly low. far lower than my old PC
