New Outlook doesn't recognise old .pst files?

Hello, quick summise of situation:

was running 98 with XP upgrade
HD running out of space due to photos/games etc
backed up Outlook .pst/pab files on (new) external hd
cleared C drive
installed XP (from CD) from new onto C drive
pointed New Outlook at .pst files on external drive (also moved to C drive)
Nada!

I can see that the backed up file has 65MB of info in it (size of file) so I
KNOW my contact info and old emails are there ... but I can't get the New
Outlook to recognise it.

I hope it's just me and there's a simple answer to this problem. Thanks in
anticipation!

Clarify what you mean by "pointed Outlook to these files."
Outlook must have read/write access to files. You must move them to your
local hard drive and remove their read only attribute.
Outlook has not used PAB's for years. Time to import them into your PST.

Thanks for the prompt response. To clarify "pointed" means
File; Open; Outlook Data File; .pst file

I have also tried Tools; Options; Mail Setup; Data Files

I originally asked Outlook to look on the external drive, didn't work, so
moved to Local Drive, made sure on Properties that file wasn't Hidden or Read
Only but it still doesn't work.

I have run a Virus Scan on the individual file (run regular system ones of
course) to check if that's the problem. Have now run out of ideas ... just
don't want to give up hope yet as there is 2 years of info/contacts in this
..pst ...

Can you (pretty please) think of anything else?

Once you tried to open this PST file from an external drive, there is a good
chance you corrupted it, corrupted your profile, or both.
Repair the PST file using the Inbox Repair Tool
Create a new profile from scratch. Then try to open the PST in the new
profile.
Make sure you know where a backup for this PST exists.

What message did the new Profile give you?
Are you certain this is a new profile with a new name, created from scratch
and not copied?

To Russ Valentine, OK, I shall do it again this weekend, completely from
scratch, as I can't remember what the msg was and I'll let you know.

Thanks again!
