Hello all.

I am having a problem with my new added HDD for my computer upgrade. Last week, I replaced my WinFast A250 LE TD - MyVIVO Edition Ti4200 video card with an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) and added a Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 120 GB HDD (6Y120P0; 7200 RPM; 8 MB cache). Since I already had a CD burner, a DVD-ROM drive, two existing HDDs, etc. and wanted to add a new HDD, I had to my ASUS BIOS enable the Raid feature (http://www.anycities.com/user/mainboards/asus/asus.html).

I had problems with my Windows XP Professional SP1 (all updates) with lock ups (HDD light get stuck, Windows become unresponsive after a few seconds -- can't even ping this computer from another machine, and then I am forced to do a hard reboot). Windows' event logs showed problems:

Sometimes, I heard clucking sounds (not clicks). I don't know what that means. I found out disabling WinXP Promise MBUltra133 (PDC20276) IDE Controller OR disabling Pure-UDMA (PDCC20276 BIOS v2.2.0.1020.13 BIOS will not show these problems. Basically, I have no new HDD when I do this. Eventually after trials and errors, I found out the cable ribbon (used before) was bad because BIOS eventually couldn't find my new HDD anymore (D2; Maxtor 6Y120P0; LBA; 117248 MB; UDMA 6). I notice this happens after the computer has been powered on for over 30 minutes.

New cable (80 pin conductor ATA) fixed it for a day, then the problem SLOWLY came back. I had a lock up when I tried to access fils from the new HDD last night. Tonight, I tried to record a video from my ATI's TV tuner and computer locked up. A few hours later, I had more lock ups and heard clucking noises! Maybe a heat issue (don't I have enough cooling now)? Why did the new cable replaced worked for a day? Shouldn't the cables be able to handle the heat if it is damaged by heat? My motherboard is usually 109 degrees (F) and CPU is average 120 degress (F). However, I have seen the CPU go high as 140 degrees(F) when gaming or doing anything intensive.

My computer specification can be found at http://alpha.zimage.com/~ant/antfarm/about/computers.txt (primary computer) and MSINFO32 results are at http://apu.edu/~philpi/temp/msinfo32.txt (374 KB)
Using WindowsXP Promise MBUltra 133 (PDC20276) IDE Controller; 8/29/2002; v2.0.1020.40.

For now, I will leave the new HDD disabled in Windows until I can figure out what is going on and to avoid more annoying lock ups. I am going to run Maxtor's powermax.exe overnight.

Thank you in advance. :)

Hello all.

I am having a problem with my new added HDD for my computer upgrade. Last
week, I replaced my WinFast A250 LE TD - MyVIVO Edition Ti4200 video card
with an ATI All-In-Wonder Radeon 9800 Pro (128 MB) and added a Maxtor

I had problems with my Windows XP Professional SP1 (all updates) with lock
ups (HDD light get stuck, Windows become unresponsive after a few seconds --
can't even ping this computer from another machine, and then I am forced to
do a hard reboot). Windows' event logs showed problems:

Back in March I picked up one of these drives and it died on day 2 of
ownership. It simply stopped responding resulting in my system hanging with
it connected (I had it as a spare drive to be used to backup data).
Thinking it was a fluke, I quickly packed it up and returned it for an
exchange. Its now 6 months later and the replacement drive just crapped
out, this time the symptoms are spontaneous reboots whenever that drive is
accessed in a particular area.

I just started looking to see if others have had problems with these drives
and let me tell you we are not the only ones out there with bad Maxtors.

I'll RMA this thing again but I'm not sure what I'll do with it. One thing
is for certain, I'll never buy another Maxtor drive (my blacklist now
includes Maxtor Diamondmax and IBM Deskstars).

Thankfully my WD Special Editions are still running strong in RAID 0.

My suggestion to you is if you still can, exchange it and get a Seagate or
Western Digital drive.

With that many hardware upgrades, did you do a Repair Installation of XP?

Hmmm! Did yours make weird clutching noises, show errors, etc.? I ran
PowerMax overnight with scan (not burn-in) and it found no problems. I did
notice the HDD was manufactured recently. I think it said it was made in
August 2003 which is VERY recent!

What other good ways to test the drive? I haven't had any lost files,
etc. yet.

I just started looking to see if others have had problems with these drives

OK! Please keep posting in case it is not a disk defect. I need more
evidences. I do have a backup.

I only added a new HDD and new video. Please note that I have NO problems
if I disconnect/disable the new HDD. I did not change the motherboard, etc.

Also, I watched my voltage usage when the HDD make noises and Windows
go crazy. Voltages do not drop or increase in spikes. Just small
numbers.

PowerMax overnight and it found no errors. I did a full check, not a
burn-in test. I will try burn-in test tonight.

Are there any other good tests to try to determine if the HDD is bad
or something else? Thank you in advance. :)

30 minutes - is this the setup in your energy saving settings?

After replacing the cable - the lockup seems random, but this may after an
attempt to access a file on the HD?

I don't know. Don't I have enough cooling and aren't the
temperatures I listed efficient? I forgot to mention my
room can get up to 85 degrees(F). Maybe I need more HDD
coolers.

Sounds like you have the same problem as I have! (see my posting in
alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus)
30 minutes - is this the setup in your energy saving settings?

I already checked. I had power management disabled. Same in Windows.

After replacing the cable - the lockup seems random, but this may after an
attempt to access a file on the HD?

Yeah seems random. The lock up can happen randomly. It seems like only
if the computer wants to access the new drive.

Yes, but what matters much more is the SMART
temperature of the drive. You may well get a rather
nasty surprise with that particular Maxtor drive.
I forgot to mention my room can get up to 85 degrees(F).

It could well be the drive getting too hot.
Maybe I need more HDD coolers.

Or even just leaving a spare bay adjacent to that drive
that is getting to hot can make a surprising difference.

OK. It is a bit crowded so I will see what I can do. No lock ups yet
since I got home (only up for an hour).

Its best to run something that displays the SMART
values. Like Motherboard Monitor or SpeedFan etc.
I know I have SMART sensors enabled,
but I never got any alerts or messages.
But then I have never seen one before.

You'd know it if you had got any.

Quite likely given the detail of the symptoms
you are seeing, specially the delayed onset of
visible problems, and that drive which is known
to get stinking hot if it doesnt get enough airflow.
OK. It is a bit crowded so I will see what I can do.
No lock ups yet since I got home (only up for an hour).

Thats absolutely classic with drive overheating
problems. They take time to show up and the
room temperature obviously matters too.

Hello all.
<snipped for length of reply>

Sounds like you're running the lumberjacker modified bios to to turn your
raid controller into normal ultra133 controller. I have an Asus board with
the same controller and I've also seen the error message you have when
running a particular driver. The problem and error message you're seeing is
probably caused by the particular driver you're using. I've tried most of
them myself and the one that works best was included in a bios file which
unfortuanately is no longer listed on the site. I can't tell you the driver
version because I'm currently not using the controller. :( Try another
driver version and also if your asus board is VIA chipset based?... download
and install the VIA performance patch...the one specifically for VIA boards
with promise controllers, the file can be found on the same site.

Still nothing so far...

After about three hours, the HDD locked up when I was accessing my
new drive. I will see if I can improve the heating thing. I will
also check out the two utilities.

Here's something new. I ran MaxBlast (disk utility from Maxtor) for
over 30 minutes for a single burn-in test. No problems. I am going to
run it all night to see if I can reproduce the problem. So far, I
haven't.

Even the BIOS found my drive unlike the old cable that had to be
replaced. Does this still sound like a heat issue? If I do a burn-in
test, doesn't make a lot of heat for the new HDD? Are there other
disk utilities I can use? No Windows programs due to problems with
HDD.

I will get back to you... ;)

Yes, my motherboard is VIA chipset based. Where is the VIA performance patch?
Is it http://www.anycities.com/user/treiber/tools/rpp102.zip ? Isn't this what
Hyperion 4in1 Drivers do because I have v4.48 or so installed already.

I want to be careful on what I download and install. These things can be
dangerous. ;)

OK! Disregard since this doesn't appear to be an OS problem. Finally, I got an
error from Maxtor PowerMax v4.06's burn-in tests (don't know how long it took
or which test it failed): Y32S57. I wish Maxtor would tell us what this
encrypted # means.

No the Hyperion drivers don't address or install anything specific for the
Promise controller to use AFAIK. Your link goes to the performance patch to
suit 'all controllers', you wan't the file above it specific to Promise
only. The correct link to the file is
http://www.anycities.com/user/treiber/tools/viapfd.zip
On the same page at the top is links to the various Pure UDMA files. Try one
of the different drivers first to try and correct the time out problem and
subsequent error message you're getting and once that's sorted then install
the performance patch. Don't expect blistering performance with the Promise
controller no matter what you do because it always runs considerably slower
than the normal IDE channels. The patch will help 'slightly' with read and
write transfer rates. You could also try the George Breese VIA latency patch
(on same page) which is also supposed to help as well, but it never improved
things at all on my board. When you get fed up with the lack lustre
performance of the Promise onboard chip you might want to consider a PCI
card based controller for extra channels (rather than use the Promise
onboard raid controller) which is what I did in the end, or go for larger
HDD's so you stay within 4 drives and only use the normal IDE channels.
I want to be careful on what I download and install. These things can be

No there's no problem with viapfd.zip, I've installed and used it many
times. It does what it's supposed to do (improve performance of the onboard
Promise controller) but don't expect miracles.

Yes, usually.

Yeah, there are a few around like http://www.nu2.nu/utils

I don't think I will be needing this. It doesn't appear to be an OS
problem after getting results from Maxtor's DiskMax program (disk
tester) with its burn-in feature. It failed. :(

It seems like I have a heat problem since the lock ups and symptoms
only appear after an hour or so uptime on my computer. What do you
think?
