New M/B, no audio now

Win XP SP2 - I had an ASUS motherboard short out on me so I had to replace
it. I installed an ASUS P5VD2-MX SE and everything works fine except the
audio. This board has integrated audio but I was nto able to uninstall the
old audio drivers fromt he previous board prior to it shorting out. Per
Device Manager, the audio drivers are working properly now yet in Control
Panel - Sound & Audio Devices, it lists "no audio device". I am not allowed
the option of uninstalling the drivers via device manager nor will the m/b
accept my loading the drivers that came with the m/b disk. I am at a loss on
what to do here.

Thanks again DL but I had no luck.

Ok, I tried a Repair installation but was not offered the Repair option,
only thre Recovery one.

I ran a KillDisk program (www.killdisk.com) which erased the whole drive
then installed a fresh complete installation on Windows XP SP2. I then loaded
the drivers that came with the motherboard and am in the same boat again as I
was with the original O/S.

Per Device Manager, the correct audio drivers are loaded and working
properly yet in Control Panel > Sound & Audio Devices, it lists "no audio
device". I am still lost on what to do. I gave up with the Repair
Installation and went with a completely new Installation and still no luck.

The correct drivers appear in Device Manage but

If you have an OEM win cd it may only offer to replace/recover your
installation, or install a fresh installation
What *exact* type of win cd was it?
ie is it actually a MS Win cd or is it an OEM recovery cd?

I am using OEM software "For distribution only with a new PC". I did a fresh
install on a different drive after erasing it and still no luck with sound.
The only option in the BIOS referring to onboard sound is enabled to AC97 and
the m/b drivers are loaded. Just like before, they show in Device Manager but
NO AUDIO DEVICE is listed in Control Panel>Sound & Audio Drivers.

I can't find anything on the net about this issues except other forums that
pull posts from here.

I appreciate all your help DL.

I'm as perplexed as you; initially by the fact that winxp did'nt give you an
option to repair an existing installation.
As to the devices issue, all I can suggest is
1) In Devices, show hidden Devices & see if they are shown there
2) Explore your mobo cd & check if there are any other 'sound' device
installs
