Realtek High Definition Audio doesn't install properly

I have a problem installing Realtek High Definition Audio drivers.
When installing the most recent driver from Realtek website
(WDM_R178.exe), the driver installation stops with an error message:
Install Realtek HD Audio Driver Failure !!

When I look at the device manager, it says that the drivers are not
installed.

I'm using an ASUS P5K motherboard with onboard audio enabled in the
BIOS. Also using WinXP Pro with all the latest patches.

At some point, I decided to disabled the audio device within the BIOS
and I was able to fully install the driver from Realtek, but if I go
back and re-enable the onboard audio.. still the same issue, no sound
and the device manager still show a problem with High Definition Audio
driver.

I also tried to uninstall the High Definition Audio driver from the
device manager, but I'm getting an error saying that it's not possible
to remove it because it is required for booting the OS.

I saw a couple of threads on similar issue, but can't find a clear
solution for that.

Please help me with this issue.

did you install the Microsoft Universal Audio Architecture (UAA) driver
first? On some MoBo it is required to gain access to the special HDA Bus
that the sound chip is attached to.

I read the document you proposed, but I don't understand how to
install this additionnal driver. From what I understand in the
document, I have the feeling that these drivers are already included
with Windows XP.

Can you let me know how to install this driver please.

Ok.. I found it. This driver was actually included with the Realtek
driver.. just had to install it from another directory. Once I
figured out, I removed all previously Realtek driver.. reinstalled the
UAA driver, then the Realtek driver once again and all was good.

did you install the Microsoft UAA? you need to...

install UAA first, reboot, then retry the realtek hd driver install.

this is a very common issue, the realtek "fine print" should tell you
this.

The RealTek installer includes a copy of UAA, but judging by
the size, may only include the English version. So it is possible
for the ReakTek installer to work for some people.

The MSHDQFE folder in the RealTek package, contains UAA. The whole
package (something like 25 languages) can be obtained from Microsoft.

I tihink kb888111 is for 32 bitr platforms and and it does not work in the
case of 64 bit platforms. What can be done in the case of 64 bit platforms.
My system is win xp pro 64 bit, on board realtek hd audio system. Couldu
please help me ?

I see a UAA for download here. The list of operating systems is a bit
longer than for KB888111. The 54MB download is an InstallShield, so I
cannot look inside it, to verify anything.

On the MS site, I cannot figure out exactly what they expect a user
to do for WinXP X64. I guess I'm using bad search terms.

64 BIT has its own newsgroup.

microsoft.public.windows.64bit.general

you might try asking them.

Don't know if your still looking ofr ans answer but I had a similar issue with the ASRock 4CoreDual-SATA2 R2.0 MotherBoard.

To get this to work I had to uninstall the "Microsoft UAA Bus Driver for High Definition Audio" in Device Manager under System Devices - then I installed the Realtek Drivers from the motherboard CD and rebooted - it installed the audio and reinstalled the microsoft device. It seems to wokr although I don't have a high def output to test it... Sorry!

Had "no audio device", although the RealTek HD driver seemed to be working properly.

Received "RealTek Driver Install failed!!" msg..

Uninstalled the UAA driver, installed RealTek, and reinstalled UAA... works great!
(All that was required to re-install UAA was right-click on "System Devices" and selecting "Scan for new devices".

The latest version of the Realtek HD Audio driver is 2.01, so 1.78 is pretty
dated.

The key seems to be, disabling UAA and removing UAA. Then
try the RealTek driver install again. I believe the RealTek
package has its own copy of 888111, so as soon as you remove
UAA, the ReakTek package should put it back.

disabling and installing the UAA Driver worked for me. I have been looking for the solution for months. i have a GeForce6100SM-M2 64 AMD processor support with a Realtek Audio system. THANK YOU!
