I recently downloaded XP onto my new laptop and when I did so, the display on

You mean installed XP, right? Downloading is the process of copying a file
from from the internet to your computer.
and when I did so, the display on

When installing XP you need to then install the drivers for all the hardware
in your computer. Sounds like you didn't install XP compatible video
drivers. Go to the laptop manufacturer's web site and download all the XP
drivers for your model laptop.

Right-click Desktop > Properties > Settings

Change your resolution to 800x600 or higher.

Do you mean "installed?" "Downloading" is when you transfer data from
a server or host computer to a client machine.

Have you tried installing the video card manufacturer's
WinXP-specific drivers for the computer's video adapter?
