New Instances of Excel

We're exporting data from a 3rd party application into Excel 2002. When we
used to do this, Excel would open all of the workbooks in the same
"instance" of Excel so we could move the different worksheets between the
different workbooks. Now, when we export data, it opens a new "instance" of
Excel each time so that we cannot move the different worksheets between the
workbooks.

Is there a setting in Excel that would control this type of thing so that
when we open a new workbook, they'll all open in the same instance?

Brandon,

Is it really opening a separate instance, or does it just appear so because there are now
separate buttons on the task bar? The latter is enabled with Tools - Options - View tab -
"Windows in taskbar." You'll still be able to see all the opened workbooks in the instance
with Window (menu bar) or switch between them with Ctrl-Tab. If it's really starting
separate instances, you'll only see the one workbook in the Window menu, and you can switch
between them with Alt-Tab.

They appear to be separate instance because when we go to the "Window" menu,
only the one workbook shows up in the list (the other open workbooks do
not).

I have similar issue - in Excel 2007 - when I open one excel file, I would
like to drag it on my left screen and maximize, then open a different excel
file and drag it on my right screen and be able to see both at once. It
let's me toggle through them - or within one window I can split one screen -
but defeats having 2 monitors.

A 2 monitor issue would be a different story. You WANT Excel to open in
multiple instances, whereas I DON'T WANT Excel to open in multiple
instances. Here's a link that addresses what you're referring to (I haven't
tested it myself).

Joe,

Can you not just spread one Excel window across both monitors. Then set each document
(inner) window to fill each monitor? You'll probably have to keep both the Excel (outer)
window and the document (workbook, inner) windows in the restored state (not maximized).
