New homebuilt PC -- Is this locked keyboard a hardware or software issue?

The keyboard locks up while I install Windows XP Pro on a new
homebuilt PC. I have gotten past the problem by starting over 4-5
times.

Another fact: when the keyboard would freeze, it always happened at
the same point in setup. I could tell where the KB locked up by
toggling the capslock key on/off and watching the light go on/off,
when active.

Starting with the XP CD in the CDROM drive, F6 --> load SATA/RAID
drivers from floppy. The keyboard goes dead at the point where I want
to finish installing Windows.

The setup finally worked and installed windows, but I wonder if there
is a problem with the KB connection of the motherboard. The keyboard
itself is borrowed from another PC so I know it works.

Question: Is there a utility to test whether I have a problem with the
KB connection of the motherboard?

The computer send the signal for the keyboard check on boot flashing the
scroll lock... lights etc.

What connection is your keyboard, PS2/USB?

I meant to say that the keyboard goes dead at the point where setup is
starting (to install) Windows.

The keyboard cable is USB with a USB to PS2 converter going into the
PS2 on the motherboard.

In my experiences and consequential opinion, believe any hardware converters
should be avoided. Get a PS/2 keyboard.

Remove the converter or use a keyboard that will work natively with the
connector on the motherboard. After Windows is installed you can change
keyboards if desired.

Does the motherboard's manual state that it can accept such a
configuration? Does the keyboard's manual unequivocally state that it
is "USB/PS2 compatible?"

If not, try using a PS/2 keyboard.
