New HDD XP re installed then IE7 install causes boot error

I have recently installed a new HDD and new DVD Rom drive.

I installed a copy of XP Professional I receiced from Dell and then
attempted to re install all the programs I had pre HDD failure.

I seem to be having problems when I re install IE7 (which I am positive I
had pre HDD failure). When I install I and then reboot I get a boot error
saying a file call hal.dll is corrupt or missing. This is a very similar
error to the one I got when my HDD failed except the file name was
ntfskrnl.dll (I think).

When this happens I have to re install XP and exverything works if I don't
re install IE7.

I would like to use IE7, but not sure how to resolve this issue.

If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated.

Thanks

That is so weird! Sounds like when you are installing IE7 it is changing
your boot.ini file. It sure would be nice if you can list it here before and
after IE7 install. But that might be hard to do without one bootable
computer or a bootable CD/DVD, flash drive, etc. around.

Does that copy from Dell also contain the Recovery Console? It looks like
this from the Setup menu and you press R to get there.

Windows Setup
-------------
- To set up Windows XP now, press ENTER
- To repair a Windows XP installation using
Recovery Console, Press R.
- To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

Ok, not sure why, but I have re installed everything in following order

XP
IE7
McAfee
DivX
MSN

All seems to be fin now so not really sure what was happening before as I
didn;t do anything much different from the above other than maybe re
installing in a different order....
