Hi. I have a dell inspiron 9200. XP professional is already installed but i
also have a re-installation cd. Now, I need a bigger hard drive. I went to a
store called tigerdirect, they said that I have to reinstall XP on the new
HDD. They also said that THEY would install the HDD for $40 and put xp on the
new hdd for about $100. My question is, can i install XP on my new HDD with
my re-installation cd i got with my dell? If it is possible, what are the
steps of doing that? I dont think I should pay someone to do something that I
can easily do myself. Thanks in advance for the responses.

Certainly you can. Best is to check the documentation that came with the
computer or contact Dell tech support for info on how to install with the
their reinstallation CD.

In place of doing that you could use Acronis True Image to clone the old
drive to the new. Get a USB adaptor to connect the new drive to the
notebook, or buy an external hard drive enclosure for 2.5" hard drives,
insert the new drive in it, connect it by USB the notebook, clone the drive
with Acronis, remove the old drive, install the new, cloned drive, and boot
up. A clone is an exact duplicate of the original drive so all data and
installed programs will be there.

You can put the old drive in the enclosure, format it, and use it for
secondary storage.

Right now Acronis True Image is at a great price on newegg.com, $29.99 plus
$4.99 shipping. Tigerdirect's price for ATI is $39.99. Enclosures are in
the $20 range. Total that up, it's a bunch cheaper than having TigerDirect
do it, and you have an external drive to use as storage for images made with
ATI.
